View Full Version : Dutch Spitfire landed hard

Yesterday the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX of the RNLAF Historic Flight
Foundation skidded of the runway on landing at Gilze-Rijen airbase in the
Netherlands. The pilot was ok, but the aircraft suffered some damage. These
are the only pictures I could find.
The news agencies say this was the only flight-worthy Spitfire on the
European mainland.
Hope it will be restored before the next airshow in Holland. I've heard it
fly and the sound is incredible.

Based on the landing lights in the nose I would say it is a DC-2.

Check out airliners.net and search for DC-2 for some good pictures.

That is a DC-2 -- notice the partial slab-side -- that is the first
giveaway.

I think you'll find that the Uiver is still at Albury in Australia,
awaiting restoration. See this URL:

Nor is this the aircraft you'd have us believe.

Both aircraft are dressed up as "Uiver", but neither of them are.
The real "Uiver" has long since left the skies, having crashed at Rutbah
Wells, Iraq in 1934.

Memory is a bit foggy here - but I have a recollection of a DC-3 being
dressed up as "Uiver" pre/early 1984, and flown to Australia in some sort of
commerative flight. (London to Melbourne Air Race?)
If this is the case I have a nice picture of the aircraft touching down at
Charleville that may be worth posting here.
It may have been to celebrate this event (hope the link works):-

http://nla.gov.au/nla.cs-pa-HTTP%253A%252F%252FENC.SLQ.QLD.GOV.AU%252FLOGICROU TER%252FSERVLET%252FLOGICROUTER%253FPAGE%253DOBJEC T%2526OUTPUTXSL%253DOBJECT_ENC36UI.XSLT%2526PM_RC% 253DPICTQLD%2526PM_OI%253D31329%2526API_1%253DGET_ OBJECT_XML%2526NUM_RESULT%253D0

The commerative flight being to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the above
event.
If you search www.pictureaustralia.org and use uiver as your search key it
will bring up a number of pictures.

The aircraft at Albury is certainly a replica of the original

You are correct, it WAS a commemorative flight, using the actual DC-2 in my
photo. At the time the aircraft was owned by Mr. Colgate Darden, who loaned
it to KLM (the original owner of PH-AJU "Uiver") provided KLM would take
care of it's restauration. The DC-2 became available for sale, and the
Aviodrome museum at Lelystad Airport (EHLE) managed to buy it. She was flown
to the Netherlands, overhauled, and is available for airshows and flights
around The Netherlands. The Volkel Open Days were one of the first she was
shown again, following extensive overhaul (that's how she ended up with her
current glossy metallic finish) and repairs, as PH-AJU got damaged in a
landing accident at De Kooij Naval Air Station (EHKD) a few years ago.

And if you compare those pics with mine, you'd notice more than a few
similarities. ;-)

Both are original DC-2s, painted up as PH-AJU. The one in Albury was in dire
need of a restauration (to display condition), last time I read about her.
The one in Holland is airworthy, and possibly the sole airworthy example in
the world. The PH-AJU registration is fake, it is actually registered
NC39165 (cn 1404). Another DC-2 (fuselage+wings+engines, ex-VH-CRH, ex RAAF
A30-14) is in storage pending restauration at the Aviodrome, BTW.

Thanks, guys,

On that I tend to disagree. If I'm not incorrect the Dutch "fake" Uiver is
the only airworthy Uiver at this moment. So in my opinion it makes that one
the next best thing :-)

I can't disagree with that - I was being just a tad parochial. :-))
