View Full Version : VW derivative engine in Kitplanes-Help Please!
Fonz
September 15th 07, 06:07 AM
Good Morning all.
A few months ago I saw a VW derivative engine in the front of the kitplanes
magazine, in the What's New section in the front. I have since misplaced
this magazine and can't remember the name of the maker/distributor. The
engine is based on the VW engine, but I think didn't actually use any VW
parts. It was basically an upgraded model of a previous version and had
distinctive red anodizing to some of the parts. I thought it was a Great
Planes angine but I checked their site and it's not.
Can anyone help me out here?
My appreciation in advance.

I checked the What's New sections, but couldn't find that. Could it be this
one?

I checked this site and was very impressed about everything but one thing.
Price. At the current exchange rate it would cost me more than for a 914.
About two months ago it would have been a different story. We were getting
goos $s for the Euro.
Thanks,
Rob.

Thanks to all who replied.
The engine was in-fact an aerovee and Reggie supplied the link.
Many thanks to all who replied.
Thinking of putting it in a CH701 with a woodcomp beta and reversible prop.
This could be the ultimate STOL setup.
Any opinions on that set-up.
Any feedback on these propellers.

Don't knw anythig about the propeller, but even a 2180 CC VW is going to
be kinda short on torque for two people.
How long is the prop you are looking at?
STOLs need THRUST for rapid acceleration.
Otherwise, it ain't STOL...

I've seen one listed on Barnstormers with an A-75hp, course he didn't
claim STOL, but several with Rotax 912's did...
That Limbach turbo'd watercooled boxer looked really nice though...

For that application, you are better off with a Jabiru.

The BEST engine setup for a 701 is still the venerable 80 HP 912
Rotax. vw derivatives are by definition "ground hogs" - Sustained HP
too low for their weight.
A soo or VW makes a 701 into a single seater (which is fine if
registered as a basic ultralight in Canada as no passengers are
allowed in that configuration)

I'd have to agree about the 912 being the perfect engine for a 701.
Man, whadda hoot that would be!

G'Day John.
I thought about that, and at 2.5x the price, it becomes very expensive.
Some say, you may not be happy with the sub Jabiru performance, but I would
be happy with what I have for the price.

Again this boils down to price. Rotax engines in Australia are rediculously
expensive.

I can't read the site, but I recon that the price of that one would be more
expensive than the 914.
Does anyone know the price of the Limbach turbo? Also weight? I'd say it
would be getting up there.

First, you have to be able to buy one.
I could be wrong, but isn't that one of those engines that has been ready
for release for the spring, for the past several years?

Although I can't seem to find the company name, but
isn't there a company in Australia that specializes in
VW based engines? I'm pretty sure that I have been
on their website when I was looking for an engine.
