Those are the air-brakes, the ends of the wings actually split open
like that.

See attached pic!

Thanks, Martin.

Actually I knew those thingies were air brakes, but I was really trying to
find out why the insides were painted orange. Is it just for decoration or
does it serve a (safety or other?) purpose?

Also, in Tom's next picture you can see that insides of the (leading edge
slats?) are also painted orange. Again, is there a purpose?

Thanks in advance.

serious guess is that it's for safety. in the first pic, the inside of the
front slats (or whatever you call them) are orange too. maybe to warn ground
crew where *not* to put fingers and hands?

redc1c4,
just a swag on my part.... %-)

I read once (don't ask me where)(or when) that the first Dauntlesses had
their airbrakes insides painted the same color as the wing.
The pilot in the following plane said that when the plane in front of him
deployed his airbrakes it was like the plane suddenly stood still in the
air.
When they finally painted the insides red, the following planes could see
when the brakes were opened and they could react in time.

And orange paint is cheaper than a brake light!

Thanks. The safety reason sounds good to me.
