What airplane is that?
Some Grummann seaplane?

Could these have anything to do with the extremely hot local weather
conditions?
A seaplane operating in the Sahel (or Sub-Sahara) does seem strange. :-)

Well, it is an amphibian and considering that in those days airfields were
not omnipresent the possibility of choice between land and water for landing
could be quite handy.

Sure, except that inland there is hardly for most of the year a puddle large
enough for a small duck. I am talking about an area many millions of square
kilometers, the Sahel and the southern confines of the Sahara desert.
Was't Burkina Faso called Upper Volta at this time?
