View Full Version : Seen beside road

Saw this beside the road just east of Tucumcari, NM yesterday. Anybody
have an idea what this is, other than the obvious, ie.. a homebuilt.

Is this a one off or plans built, or what? Anybody seen this design
anywhere?

I stopped and called the number on the for sale sign (asking $5,500) and
the present owner has no knowledge of builder (now dead) or design name.
Is reputed to have flown only once. No flight damage, just a bad case
of neglect.

Thanks for your help.

That was my first impression, a Bede something or other, like a two
place -5, with influence from Rutan (the small canards in front).

Curiosity drove me to looking and I am still extremely curious about the
history or designer.

The workmanship looked acceptable, but I can't think of any sane man
that would buy and re-engine that thing and trust his life to it.

The shoulder room limit dictates a very small (narrow) pilot. And the
tandem seating would be only for a passenger with no claustrophobic
tendencies to be sure.

I did some searching too and couldn't find anything similar. Please post if
you find out any more about this.

Any chance it's not a real airframe, and instead just a home-built
children's toy?

Hello,
Given my estimation of its glide ratio, that would be my guess. Unless
it's one of those things that gets towed behind a car. Then again, it
could be a mailbox.

Pretty expensive mailbox.

Naw,... the Cri-Cri is a very successful airplane, this roadside wonder
isn't, obviously.

Neat vid of the Cri-Cri though. Sure looks like a fun thing, sort of
like strapping on wings and being a Barn Swallow for a while. I wish......

But I am still looking.

It might be a Unique, constructed by a garage tinkerer. Photos of the
interior, engine and details would be helpful. I was actually in
Tucumcari in early August, during one of my trips out to and back from
Fort Huachuca, AZ. Part of my mother's family is from New Mexico
(Skeen, Hardin, Adamson) Had my pickup truck too so I could have just
loaded it on board. Drat!

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks for the heads up George, I'll be heading back to Fort Huachuca in
January and will take a look. Can you give me an exact location? Not
that Tucumcari is all that big ... Of course my mom's family comes from
the area around Pichacho, NM and not only does everyone know each other,
just about everyone is married to each other one way or another.

I'll keep the group posted.

Cheers,

Dave

Well Dave, there was no engine, it had been removed some time ago. I
took no pics of the interior but did look for a N number anywhere that
might have lead me to a builder in the FAA database, but no joy. As I
live just east of OKC and I get through New Mexico maybe once every year

Next time you are out that way, check and see if it is still there, the
owner was asking $5,500 but I think that was a pie in the sky sum, more
like $550 would be accurate. No engine and some leading edge damage and
lots of neglect.

Best to you,

George

Dave,

As best as my memory serves me, it was just a couple of miles east of
town, there were some houses, a metal shop (with the plane sitting in
front, alongside what looks to be an old luscombe or some such thing)
and a mobile home on the east side. The folk in the mobile home are
tired of answering questions, don't bother knocking. This was all on the
south side of I-40. There was a sign hanging on the gate with the number
barely visible and I called the owner. He wasn't much of a source of
information but he tried.

I will send you the phone number, assuming your e-mail works.

Ah, I know where that is approximately. Yes, my email is good.

Thanks again!
