I love the idea of the bright color display, but what I'm really
wondering is ... is it available in the USA with FLARM capability?

Appears to come standard with Flarm built in, according
to the brochure on Solaire's website, www.solairecanada.com
(click on the news section for LX8000 info). Looks
like a pretty champy unit to me, and should make for
a nice clean cockpit too...Price as yet to be announced,
but Ed estimates it should be in the upper $5000-lower
$6000 range. Not unreasonable considering a built in
IGC logger, no need for Ipaq/cables/cradles, built
in Flarm etc. LX is also offering Lx7000/7007 trade
in upgrade options. Neat-o.

Yes FLARM is a normal option on all current LX7000-7007.....but, who in the
USA even uses FLARM???? doesn't seem to be a rush to get this technology
here
and LX7007 can also be upgrades to LX8000 with color and since the LX7000 is
already IGC approved, adding color display should have no relevence to IGC
approvals for the new version...

One reason is FLARM won't sell units to the USA, so I'm wondering if
FLARM actually allows LX to sell that capability to US pilots. If so, I
think there would be some market for it, like the Minden pilots flying
at 250 knot closing speeds along the White Mountains, or maybe ridge
runners on the Allegheny ridges, and pilots in contests.

Last I looked, FLARM didn't transmit on a frequency that would be legal
for unlicensed use in the US and Canada. Has that been fixed?

It is entirely relevant. The LX8000 is not IGC approved at the moment,
and won't be until LXN submits an application and it is actually approved.

FLARM, if all gliders were equipped, would be wonderful to have on
the Whites or Bald Eagle Ridge. Flown them both, and closing speeds
are very high. On the Whites, "Procedure Alpha" is merely a very noisy
patch to the problem of knowing where other gliders are before you
could see them.
If you're cruising below ridge height, will your Zaon or similar
unit even be interrogated by ATC? Will it tell you about another
similarly equipped glider when neither of you have a transponder?
My glider in Australia is FLARM equipped (locally a club mandate,
and nationally a competition mandate) and the system works very well.
It doesn't go crazy or blank out other gliders in the gaggle, or tell
you to get away from the FLARM equipped tow plane. There is no
technology to replace a good lookout, but this device really helps and
I have not noticed it getting in the way.
The Australian unit, OzFLARM, is programmable to Australian or
European frequencies.
Meanwhile, the frequency issue is only a part of a problem. The
manufacturer isn't currently interested in doing business with North
Americans because of the litigious society.
Technology isn't the answer, but it can be our friend. And the
problem might not be huge, but it's there or we wouldn't care about
it.
That LX8000 does look nice... Who is selling their old LX7000
display for the CAI 302?

Solaire have withdrawn the details from their website. I hope LX have
fixed some of the weaknesses in the 7007 such as limit of 600
waypoints and fiddly transfer of flight log to SD Card (I suggest if
you have the SD card the logger should save the last flight log on the
card, as the new EW device does).
