View Full Version : At what age did you start logging time towards your first pilot license?

Jim Logajan

I saw the following poll at Doug Reeve's "Van's Airforce" and was mildly
surprised to see almost 70% first logged time under the age of 30 (at least
at the time I last looked):

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=22591

So I wonder how many of you I can get to (reasonably) honestly answer the
following three questions:

(1) In which age range below did you start logging time towards your first
pilot certificate?
[< 16] [16 - 20] [21 - 30] [31 - 40] [41 - 50] [51 - 60] [61 - 70] [> 70]

(2) In which age range below did you acquire your (non-student) pilot
certificate?
[< 16] [16 - 20] [21 - 30] [31 - 40] [41 - 50] [51 - 60] [61 - 70] [> 70]

(3) How old are you now?
[< 16] [16 - 20] [21 - 30] [31 - 40] [41 - 50] [51 - 60] [61 - 70] [> 70]

(4) What is your favorite color?

My own answers:
(1) [51 - 60]
(2) Working on it.
(3) [51 - 60] Some days it feels like on the upper side of that range,
others on the lower side.
(4) Arrest-me-red.

Naw. It's just a bit of mixed humor - I definitely appreciate the replies
though. (The one extra item over the alleged count and favorite color
question are concepts borrowed from Monty Python scripts.)

Pseudochelidoninae are river martins, not true swallows. Both African
and European swallows are Hirundininae. Not to put too fine a point on
it, it is generally accepted that all swallows are descended from
African species.

Both African and European species when unladen have a cruising airspeed
of approximately 25 mph, but they can reach 40 or 50 mph in short
bursts. Chinese swallows are about the same.

After reading these replies, I see Boyer wasn't kidding when he said
the pilot population is aging : ) (I know, I know... I'll get there
someday too...)

Updated to include Thorpe, Gardner, and Barrow responses. Will update
again early next week if more responses come in.

Here are the histograms of the responses generated as of 3:40 my time

[1] Includes "aquamarine," "blue, no green" and "blue green" because I
like short color names.
[2] Includes "low lead blue," "midnight blue," and "red, no blue" because
because because of the wonderful things it does.
[3] Includes "four shalt thou not count...," "you only asked for three,"
"don't have one," "five,,,,,,no, three," "red, no blue, no," "blue, no
wait," and non-responses because it makes sense to me to do it that way.
[4] Includes "gold" because I'm narrow minded and I don't know why I'm
spending time on collecting stats on my own humor question.

[ 16] [16 - 20] [21 - 30] [31 - 40] [41 - 50] [51 - 60] [61 - 70] [ 70]

(2) In which age range below did you acquire your (non-student) pilot
certificate?
[ 16] [16 - 20] [21 - 30] [31 - 40] [41 - 50] [51 - 60] [61 - 70] [ 70]

(3) How old are you now?
[ 16] [16 - 20] [21 - 30] [31 - 40] [41 - 50] [51 - 60] [61 - 70] [ 70]

(4) What is your favorite color?

My own answers:
(1) [51 - 60]
(2) Working on it.
(3) [51 - 60] Some days it feels like on the upper side of that range,
others on the lower side.
(4) Arrest-me-red.

im surprised how young i seem to be compared to most other gliders (no offence)

with the first, second and third question i cant even answer properly
i got my license not even a month ago, the day i turned 15
my fave colour is green though..

This is really very interesting. At our local EAA chapter meeting we are
always looking to get younger folks to join and learn about aviation. As
I look around (and I am 61) pilots now tend to be gray haired folks.
Those that still have hair. Your #3 question shows that we are an aging
population. I know that this is not a scientific study, but I think it
does reflect what is going on. I have not read any other comments yet,
I'll scroll down and see.

1] Orange Yellow
2] Orange Blue
3] Yellow Green
4] 42

I'll bet at least a couple of you here in r.a.p. can figure out how to
decode these.

Resistor color codes?

1. 34
2. 36
3. 45

That last one though, that's really off the wall. Yellow-red? Kinda
orange-y, don'tcha think?

Bingo!

BTW, I just couldn't resist using the HHGTTG reference, so there you
have it, the Universal Answer is not only a number, but it's also
orange.

What I find especially interesting is that that 90% of the responses to a
pilot's forum on an internet site were in the 40-70 range.

I would think that the a usenet newsgroup based survey would skew the results
to a lower age group - as a percentage of the general population, how many 70
year olds spend a whole lot of time in Usenet?

Just saw this thread...

My first half-hour of dual was in a J-3 on 25 February, 1945 at age 15.

Yes.

I should add that, after accumulating about 8 hours, through spins, I
laid it aside i n 1946 short of solo, to attend college and start my
career. In 1964, having moved to Ohio where flying weather is more
pleasnant, I finished my private pilots course, became licenced then,
flying since.
