View Full Version : where to get plans

I am looking for plans for plans for a tube and fabric, side by side 2
seater, high folding wing, stol/bush aircraft such as the kitfox, zenair
701 or Merlin GT. 65 hp motor like Rotax 582.
If anyone has a set or know where to get them would be greatly appreciated.

Well I can't help you but I can help you shorten your list some. The Zenith
701 is neither a tube and fabric or a folding wing and doesn't perform very
well with a 65 hp engine.

Oh come on, the wings will fold if you hit them just right.

You are correct on most of those items, except that 701 does have an
option for folding wing. See http://www.zenithair.com/stolch701/fwo.html
While it does exist, I don't think its very popular.

Thanks guys...
I know the Zenair is not fabric and I don't know how it flys 65 horses. I
would love to have $40k to splash on a kit with a 912 but with about a
quarter of that available I am going to have to settle for something a
little more realistic. I don't mind tackling a scratch built project if I
could find a set of proven plans for this type of aircraft.

Whoa! guys, gals if any.
Your still thinking about using Rotax and half VW engines. Not to bag
on them but there not the most reliable for the price or the weight.
When i was off web browsing I found these guys http://www.rotaryae.com/
They are rotary but you may want to take a peek they changed my mind
from the lycoming, VW for my Quickie Q-200 I now have one on order as
soon as there testing or something like that is done.

If they haven't even started testing them yet, what makes you think they'll be
more reliable than Rotaxes or half-VWs?

Do you get Kitplanes Magazine? The December issue lists all known KIT
planes and I believe the January issues show all PLANS built planes...

bob you are about 45 ponies short of a decent engine there.
stol is all about surplus horsepower for the climb out.

A quick Google search on any of those names will get you in touch with
sources their plans, and lots of cool photos too.

There more reliable cause they have tested the industrial rotary not
aviation rotary and has been proven on experimental aircraft already.
The changes from the industrial engine to aviation engine is really to
make it handle the altitude changes and endure constant strain for
hours on end and more. For example on the reliability a man purchased
a rotary engine, he was unaware that the engine did not have oil
already in it for shipping reasons. He mounted it flew on it for four
hours before noticing a power decrease. He called the manufacture and
ask for the assistance after a few exchanging of words he got his
answer. He found out that he burnt out the rotary piston and did some
damage to his carb. Heres the part i died over in disbelief 462.us$
dollars later he had his engine ready to go again.

How many units have been installed in aircraft, and how many total flying hours
do they have? Chevy, VW, and Ford engines have been reliable in non-aviation
applications, too...

Just a few flight hours on a couple of ultralights I'll guess.
We'll have to wait a little time before a significant number on those
engines make it to TBO...

Ron I found their website interesting. One thing that I found odd was
that if you wanted dual spark plugs, you had to have a turbo charger.
>From their own description, you should have any need for a turbo.
I also found it odd that the psru was an additonal 50% of the original
engine.

You are right I had forgotten. It's funny, after being involved in the
Zenith building community since 2002 I have never seen it mentioned anywhere
outside of the Zenith Website.

There are a large number of plans built 701s out there.

There was a guy in Comanche OK some years back that was offering a
single rotor and double rotor Mazda based engine. I stopped by his place
and saw that he was planning on installing one in a BD-5.
Some of the problems he told me about that he was working on was a very
hot exhaust system. ( Mazda used a cumbersome heat shield) Fuel
consumption was very high, partially due to the fact that the actual
C.I. was about twice as much as Mazda listed. I think the high fuel
consumption was his big stumbling block. I noticed on the above website
they list fuel consumption as a problem in the past but they don't say
they have solved it.
