View Full Version : A new pilot in the family
Jay Honeck
November 25th 07, 12:46 AM
Woo hoo! Our 17-year-old son, Joe, passed his Private checkride
today, on a picture-perfect fall afternoon!
He flew the rental Cezzna 150 down to Burlington, IA to meet up with
his Designated Examiner, an old P-38 Lightning pilot named Tommy
Tomkins. He's the same guy that gave Mary her checkride nine years
ago -- and she said he was old THEN! He's well North of 80, but still
pretty spritely, according to Joe.
The ride took 1.4 hours, and contained no surprises. Joe was well
prepared, with a bit over 45 hours of "real" flight training time --
and about a thousand hours of "prep" time with us! I'm hoping to be
his first passenger tomorrow. Then we'll have to see about getting him
checked out in Atlas...
One down, one to go. Our 14 year old daughter has a couple of years
to go before she can get started....

Fabulous! Three pilots in the family. Will you give Joe equal PIC

Hey, everyone -- do me a favor and bombard Joe's email box with your
congratulations, just like you did after his solo flight. He's a
great kid, and he worked extremely hard to earn his ticket.

I don't think he can afford the hourly rental rate...
;-)
Seriously, he's gonna be hard-pressed to afford to stay current in the
FBO's Cezzna 150. Until he's out of college, and working a good job,
I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up having to hang it up for a year
or two.
But, hey -- he's got it in his wallet. THAT was the important part.
And he's still talking about possibly pursuing flying as a profession
-- so he may go on and get his IR and CFI.
Free BFRs!

congrats Jay... now those decisions..
most trips have an out and return leg..
which of the pilots does not get to fly?
granted, it will be awhile before he'll be ready for atlas
as for the daughter... she can solo gliders NOW and take her glider check
ride before her power rating
I'll agree it is tough to fly drafty gliders in a snowy winter

With easy access to each other as safety pilots, they'd probably do it
faster and for less money. They can do productive and loggable
foggle time during the course of normal flying.
Now's your chance, Jay!

Actually that is probalby a really good idea. Have the whole family do
the instrument together. Study nights, flying days. Each taking turns
in the left seat with the others in the back. Most university courses
have students in the back while others fly. You learn a lot sitting in
the back. I would bet this would be the cheapest way to get the ratings
for all of you.

He likes to have 2 students at the same time, taking turns in the sim &

Don't worry, Andrew -- your 5 year old will be turning 17 in (what

Congratulations to Joe. Now here is what you need to do as he goes off to
college and then the world. Give him nothing for birthdays and Christmas
other than flying time. Otherwise he might end up like I did and go years

Too late!
;-)
The way we worked his flight training was that we paid him a token
amount of cash for his work at the hotel, half of which he was
required to save in his bank account. This gave him enough $$$ to
take his girl out for pizza, while the rest of his pay went toward his
flight instruction.
Yesterday, as we were waiting for the rental 150 to come back, the
light bulb lit up over his head and he asked if THAT portion of his
pay would now be coming to him in the form of cash?
Smart kid, dang it....

Hey, you're talking to a guy who sold his plasma in order to buy 30

Do you make him pay the fully loaded rate for your cars when he drives them
or just make him put gas in them?
I would think gas in atlas would not be much cheaper then the 150 but he
would be flying a much better plane, one you can have more faith in.

Well, there's more to it than that. I can't let Joe drive our company
vehicles until he's 18, due to insurance restrictions. I haven't
checked, but that age limitation will probably be similar with Atlas.
Also, he doesn't have his high-performance endorsement, nor is he
checked out in a Piper. I suspect our insurance company will demand
somewhere between 10 and 15 hours of dual before they let him go, even
IF we can get around that age limitation.
As a result, I suspect that he'll be flying that 150 at least until he
turns 18, but I honestly haven't looked into it too deeply yet.

I would bet there is no age limitation as I would guess most insurance
companies haven't thought about teenagers in high performance aircraft.
Kids crash cars all the time, but airplanes. I think you should give
the kid the hi perf as a present and then you always have a designated
pilot :-).

Wow -- THANKS, Jim!
I don't know how you'll get 10 hours between here and OSH, though.
You'd have to go pick up Eric in Ohio, or sumpin'...

Well, time is logged from the time the aircraft begins movement towards
flight until it comes to rest afterwards. I've logged 10 hours just waiting

You can also up the ante by bringing it back to 1800 RPM and hanging it 5

Wow an age restriction for airplane insurance.
I turned 17 many years ago and was never asked my age when I showed up to
rent an airplane. They were only interested in my logbook, certificate and
medical.
Times change.
Cheers:
