View Full Version : Time for a new headset for Xmas

I'm in the market for an ANR headset, my mom said she would get it for me
since she has no idea what else to get me. I can only use so many socks and
sweaters that I will never wear anyway. I'm looking for the noise cancelling
stuff but I don't think she'll spring for $995.00 Bose headset! Anyone have
a more affordable ANR headset they would recommend? I have a regular
Sigtronics right now. It works great but after buying a set of the noise
cancelling headphones before my last commercial flight I just can't believe
the difference.

If you can stand to fly with plugs in your ears, check out the Clarity
Aloft NON-ANR headset. They are super lightweight, don't use any
batteries, and I think quieter than any ANR I've tried, including the
30-3G.

What I do when I want a high dollar gift is enlist several members of the family
to kick in for it... even as a comination birthday/Christmas gift if need be.
They kick in the cash with the understanding that their obligation for that
period of time is over... you can't look disapponted on the annoited day.
If there still isn't enough cash, make up the difference yourself. Sell your
present headset if you can.
This can be done. I wanted an electric guitar and amplifier... been wanting one
for 30 years but couldn't justify it. I finally bought what I wanted and had my
father and aunt kick in towards it for my birthday. Their contributions only
covered half of the total cost but it made the remaining cost OK for me to
absorb. Everybody's happy... except the dog when I play. <G>

I'm not dead set on the Bose or anything, if there is something in the $500
range that works great in an ANR then I would lean more towards that than a
$1000 headset. Would my mom buy the Bose, probably but I wouldn't do that to
her!

It doesn't matter what the numbers are. I wouldn't ask my family to pay what
that guitar and amp cost either. The point is that by enlisting several of them
you make the process affordable for everyone, plus they don't have to sit there
with the knowledge they got you socks for Christmas... again. They'll know they
got you something you really wanted and use.
And the truth be told, in my case, my family only coughed up half the cost of my
gift. That still brought it down to a range I could justify. Everybody wins.

I bought 2 OEM ANR Lightspeeds called Victor 1-Cell
from Tinaspilotshop.com. Fitted with gel muffs,
they were under $300 each shipped. My wife and
I have been using them for training for over
one hundred hours with no problems. At the time
I bought them, Tina agreed to take them back in
trade for a different set if I didn't like them.
I strongly recommend the gel muffs.

I second the idea of the Clarity Aloft.... When I first started
wearing it, I found that I would start up the engine, then try to
reach for my headset (which I was already wearing, but didn't
realize... ;)

One company that is not considered much by the GA crowd is Telex. Their
main clients are government related like the military. I have and like the
Stratus 30. With the current $50 rebate they run about $350 including a
music an cell phone interface. The 30 XT has more luxurious pads and
rechargeable batteries and runs about $100 more. The 50 XT is deadly quiet
and runs up around $650, IIRC.

I'd recommend the Lightspeeds. The 20XLc is an awful lot of headset for
the money.

I just got a Zulu. I absolutely love it. Especially the bluetooth
wireless interface for my cellphone.
It took a few weeks to get it since all the resellers sold out their
first shipments very quickly and I had to wait for backorders to ship.
If you can handle $850, it's worth it. That's $150 less than the Bose
X and I think the Zulu is quieter and more comfortable too.

Actually...
A piston single _can_ be "too quiet". <G>

Everyone is going to have their own opinion of headsets here but few
have actually used them all. Call me and I can help narrow down the
decision making process. Buying a headset through mail order is hard.
Here is a summary of key features of some of the more popular
headsets. The higher the price goes, generally the more comfortable
the headset and the better the ANR.
Pilot USA 1761T Spartan - $295 - Lowest Price. Simple but effective
headset. Reasonably comfortable.
Lightspeed QFR $375 - Very Quiet Headset - It will squeeze a bit
though.
Telex 30XT $499 - Rechargeable batteries. Bulky headset but very
comfortable, good ANR.
David Clark H10-13X $628- Just like their popular H10-13.4 but with
ANR. 20 Hour battery life (1 9V Battery)
David Clark X11 - $799 - Most comfortable headset. ANR good but not
top of the line.
Lightspeed Zulu - $850 - Very comfortable, Great ANR. Bluetooth
connectivity, music input, Newest headset on the market. Check out my
review http://www.youtube.com/airportpilotshop
Bose X - $995 - Very Comfortable, Great ANR. 50 hours battery life (2
AA Batteries)

Three words: money back guarantee.

Not at all sure I agree. In fact, I'm sure I don't. Also, comfort is
the one thing that is truly totally subjective.

Not true. The flight shop branded Lightspeed QFR XC models are at least
that cheap and thus the lowest priced.
Missing headsets IMHO (not complete): The Lightspeed 20 XLc (excellent
value!) and 3G series, the beyerdynamic HS 600, the Sennheisers.
Missing factors IMHO: auto-shutoff and music/cell phone input. The
first is important for all of us, the second ciritical for all who want
to use that feature.

Thomas, Thanks for the input...
Has the 20XLc actually been popular for you. When I put it on the
shelf, it collects dust compared to all the other headsets and the 23G
and 33G are not in production anymore although Lightspeed is still
selling old inventory of the 33G. To limit space in my list I only
listed my most popular headsets.
There are obviously many more models of headsets available. All
reputable stores will offer a 30 day return policy so you can try a
headset.

Very. Pilot stuff here in Germany tend to be more expensive than in the
US because of VAT (19 percent), the shipping cost and a smaller market.
Many people find brand B to be too expensive. The 20 XLc was a great
deal. The Twenty 3G was not offered here. However, both it and the 3Gs
couldn't be sold in Germany for the last year or so because a EU
regulation on allowable "bad stuff" in electronics (search "ROHS" for
details). The headsets exceeded the limits and apparently LS was unable
to change that. The Zulu does comply with RoHS and we are looking
forward excitedly to offering them from next week on.
