View Full Version : A new piloting journey

I've just taken the first small step towards obtaining my commercial
pilot certificate. Granted, it's a small step (ordered & received
written test prep book plus an '08 FAR/AIM)...but it's a step none the
less towards my transition from PP-ASEL to CP-ASEL.
All I need to do now is start studying for the written test and I'll
have accomplished my goal for '07. I figure I'll take the written test
in early '08 and start the flying portion in late winter or early spring
'08. There is that small matter of my CFII and whether he'll be located
in California or Oregon but that's ok. First thing first: study for the
written test, pass it and have it out of the way.
I do have two nice advantages that I plan to exploit. One: A nice
complex aircraft at my disposal. This is one of the reasons I bought
into the Arrow and after nearly three years of ownership and several
hundred hours flying it, things are extremely familiar and comfortable.
Two: One partner just recently received his CP-ASEL certificate so I
plan to use his knowledge to learn the maneuvers in our plane.
I'm hoping to post more about my experience progressing from PP-ASEL to
CP-ASEL. For the immediate future, I'm sure this will not be very
exciting since it quite likely may involve rants about written test
questions and such. :-) Blah...I promise it will be more exciting some
number of months down the road.

Is there a ground school in your area? I am lucky enough to have a community
college nearby that offers a cheaper and (imo) better option than my local
fbo/flight schools. Also, don't overlook the various web-based test prep
services. My style is to take the ground school and get the signoff for the
test, and then take practice tests on the web until I am consistently getting
the score that I want my future checkride examiner to see. Then I walk in and
take the test, knowing within 2 or 3 percent what my score will be.

Cool! By OSH '09, you'll be able to legally charge for flights of
Left Coasters into Iowa City for the pool party!
:-)
Seriously, good luck. It's a neat step to take...

Haven't checked into a ground school for the CP cert. Even if I found
one, I'd likely opt for self study using the test prep book...pretty
much the same way I approached the written exams for my PP cert. and
instrument written exams.
Web based test prep was a great help for my instrument rating. I plan
to check into this as I found it very helpful to take both partial and
entire practice exams online.

Hmmm, true but at current costs for a Left Coast-2-OSH roundtrip, it's
pretty expensive per seat. Still, nice idea. See if you can convince
Steve that I need to make a profit in order to pay for airplane upgrades
:-) I figure given his airplane manufacturing focus, I have a good head
start on payback time when he returns the favor by charging me for the
privilege of sitting in the right seat of the RV. "Oh, you want to
actually fly? Ok, that's another $100/hr, 2-hr. minimum" :-)

Thanks. Folks tell me this is a fun certificate to obtain once you
start flying the maneuvers. After spending countless hours not being
able to look outside for the instrument rating, this should be a nice
change.

Jack, whose courseware (not courses but thx if you provided that info too)
did you like best?

I used Jeppeson for my PP. I had the Jeppesen Guided Flight Discovery
kit and found most of the contents useful. For my tnstrument rating, I
used the ASA written test prep guide and liked the format so bought
the ASA for my CP written.
I've not used any of the King's stuff. What little I've seen from a
sample during my PP, I found it to be great information but I just can't
stand the King's style.
Have not used any of the Gleim materials but one of my partners bought
their CP kit and found it useful. I'm probably going to borrow his text
so I can report back on that front later. Remind me though :-)

Nah, I'm almost positive that tnstrument must be a word on _some_ planet!
<g>
I like that; I'll have to remember that line the next time I let something
slip past the spiell checker! ;-o)
