With some attention, you'll see is a little scratch on the painting.

Can't find the link now. They did a max power test, and apparently mx ran up
all four engines simultaneously instead of one by one, overpowering the
aircraft's brakes.

I would suggest that one does not do full power runs "one at a time" on a large
airplane with wing engines. If you do, the thing is liable to spin like a top.
Every airline I've that I've ever worked on their airplanes had a policy of
running at least two wing engines at the same time, one on each side, for full
power runs. Twin and tri-engined airplanes required that both wing engines be
run at the same time for full power runs. In fact, that same policy was used on
TWA's Connies (other airlines with prop airplanes I'm not sure about).

Generally, not all 4 are run at full power although I've done so on 707's and
747's a few times in the past (we always used chocks on all wheels, too,
including the nose). It's somewhat exhilarating, if you like getting your teeth
rattled. Even more so if standing outside, next to an engine at full power. It
vibrates you to the core.
Cheers,
jc

If you want teeth rattling and the feeling that your heart is going to
vibrate though your chest, you should try a B-52G with all 8 burning water
(water injection for the uninitiated).

I never got to work on the SR-71, but their power runs were always awesome.
Your teeth rattled from a 1/2 mile away.

I was stationed at Beale AFB, CA from 85-87. I lived in base housing three
miles from the flightline and run up area. I still remember the house
rattling when they were doing SR run ups. Wasn't the SR-71 cabled during
runups?
As for the B-52s. I was stationed at Beale AFB,TX from 78-80. My barricks
was next to the flight line. I will never forget the run up from the
KC-135s and B-52s. The black smoke and the noise was bad. The alert pad
run up were no better.

I worked B-52's in Michigan and then 135's at Mildenhall from '77-'84. The
SR-71 routinely came in TDY. I usually worked nights, just getting to bed
about the time the SR would take-off. You could hear the engine start cart
with the two huge (I believe Buick) V-8's with shorty open headers all the
way over to the barracks, so you knew what was coming . The vibration from
take-off was so bad that stuff on the shelves would occasionally fall off.

I did see chains and/or cables used as tie-downs, attached to what looked
like a manhole cover with an eyelet welded to it. Obviously it wasn't a
manhole cover as the SR never pulled it out of the concrete on HS-24, not
far from Mum's Wood.

Mostly off-topic, but, does anybody out there know the stories behind Mum's
Wood and HS-28 at RAF Mildenhall?

A quick check says the -52 engines are rated at almost 57k lbs of thrust but you
can only get "hands on" with two at a time. Only? Yah, right!

The Rolls engines on the 747's and L1011's that I worked on were in the 40,000
lb. area, while the later planes, such as the 767, kicked it up quite a bit.
Get into the 777 and you're up there with two of the 52's engines at full power.

But any of 'em will vibrate your filllings pretty good. The "old timers" say
the piston engines rattled you around more than the jets... personally, I'll
admit going back as far as 707's but I've run a couple of fairly large radials.
They shook more but to me, they didn't seem to make the air vibrate like the big
jets do. For as smooth as they are, that much 'stuff' moving around at those
kinds of RPM, well, even trimming a 'little' engine on a DC-9 or MD-80 can
rattle you around pretty good. For most guys, the first time they experience it
is not something they'll ever forget!
Cheers,
jc

I used to go on rotation TDYs to Mildenhall in 79-80 when assigned to the
1st MAPS Sq. at Dyess. I worked in the AGE hanger right around the corner
from the Det 1, 9th FMS hanger. I used to watch the SR take off in the
morning. It sort of marked the end of night shift work day. If it wasn't
the SR71 waking me up, it was the F-111s from Lakenheath.

KEWL shots...!!!! I got to see the SR-71 take off from Kadena Okinawa for
its first mission over SE Asia back in the 60s.

We always had a symmetrical run up procedure (especially on ice)...on 4
engine types if you needed to go to max power on #2 engine, you also went to
max power on #3 engine. Of course during engine trims you could go full
power on all 4 or 8 for short periods of time.

For awhile maintenance was deemed incompetent and we had to get a pilot to
do max power runs. That was always a fiasco. The pilot didn't want to be
there and very seldom cooperated with maintenance, they refused to
understand the need to motor a green engine or to check for leaks BEFORE
starting the engines. They would also get irritated whenever they had to do
multiple starts and shutdowns because of problems encountered during the
maintenance runs.

On rare occasions I personally ran up C-135 and B-52's with J-57's with
water injection on all engines, it was an extremely loud rough ride. I have
also run up C-135 and B-52's with TF-33's, 707, 727, 737, and 747's, all
were great, but none gave that bone jarring, teeth rattling ride as a BUFF
in water.

If memory serves me right, the J-57 produced; 11,000 lbs of thrust dry and
13,000 lbs wet at MRT. While the TF-33 (depending on series) produced
17,000 lbs of thrust at MRT.

Thanks
Wish I could claim to have taken them, HOWEVER
I obtained them from the SR-71 groundcrewman many years ago..
he worked at both Calif & in GB.
I was lucky to have been able to keep them from being lost..
they have been transfer from his original slides snd stored
on backup files.

Yeow! I knew they leaked like seives but that's really scary! I know the fuel
was some weird stuff but does anyone know how volatile the stuff really was?
I've tried to explain to people, after they've seen movies like Die Hard xxxxx
(or whatever) that jet planes don't have garden faucets on the engines and that
Jet A can't be lit up with a cigarette, match or lighter but they saw on the
movies and it must be true.... sigh.

Not much. Consider that it was actually used as coolant in some areas
of the plane...

Glad it helps , my memories of engine runups are not nearly as exotic.
sitting on C-119s and C-124s when they did magchecks at the end of the
runway, bouncing in the seat watching the wings flap.

and once on a 757 when they did a full power run on one engine.
Scared the crap out of the wife, she wanted off that plane.

But glad to contribute...
Heres another from the slides, looks like it was shot the same
night.

Well, I got 1/2 that with the old 707 water wagons. They phased them out just
as I started working at LAX. I wasn't sad to see the 707's go away, they were a
pain in the arse to work on... dirty, nasty and patches on top of patches.
Built like the proverbial brick outhouse and nearly bulletproof but I much
preferred working on the L-10's and 747's.

One of the worst jarring's I ever got was during a 767 engine runup. I was on
the headset, leaning against the fuse by the nose gear, half asleep. There was
an LST (Lead Systems Technician... a super trouble-shooter, as it were) and a
couple of mech's in the cockpit. #2 was already running and they were just
starting to spin #1 up when the N1 rotor simply froze. The wing and engine
flapped like a bird, the nose jumped a full 2 feet to the right and I amost got
dumped on my backside (it was 6 AM and I'd been there all night). I don't know
what the N1 %RPM was, I know it was low but still, I couldn't see individual
blades. I'd guess maybe 10% or so.

I'd never seen (or felt!) anything like it and just automatically assumed it was
an engine change, since we were working on the ETOPS program at the time
(Extended over water flight with a twin engine) and every time the airplane
farted, they changed something. I was pretty excited (not to mention wide
awake) and asked the LST what the hell had happened but he just asked if the
disk was turning now (it was, rotating slowly in the wind) and when I said yes,
he just started it up like nothing had happened. I was pretty well floored,
since even a compressor stall was cause for an engine change.

I talked to him later and he said "Oh, they do that now and then, the blades get
caught up in the sound baffle material." (which was a micarta stuff that got
chewed up as the blades grew). Basically, he just blew it off. Funny, I'd
never heard of it nor seen it, before or after. Take into account I'd just been
recalled after a 5 year lay off and a couple of years in Saudi Arabia and I'd
only just started working on the 767's. Still, it rattled me, certainly more
than the LST, anyway. The other guys said they'd never seen it before, either.
Oh well. The airplane flew off on it's morning flight and made it to London
without incident. Weird stuff, it was.
Cheers,
jc

Glad to be of some help. as you can see the photo had some decoding
errors in it. got a couple of more , but the decoding errors in those
make them unuseable, thats how old those photos are.
got them back in the early days before the internet was mainstream,
had to use a manual UUE decoding program..
