Got this in an email full of 'little-known facts'. Most were correct, but
a few were not.

So, does this seem about right? I would have guessed more.

I checked out Snopes, but no reference there.

"The average number of people airborne over the US any given hour: 61,000"

Comments appreciated......!

PS - I would have guessed over 100,000, FWIW.

100,000 is what it is supposed to be - 39,000 are sitting in airplanes on
the ground due to delays of various kinds...

In the 1970's I read that G.A. had more people in the air than
commercial airlines did. I wonder if that is still true today

Here is a picture of the Traffic Situation Display 9/11/2002, a year
after 9/11. It is morning so traffic is more concentrated on the east
coast. It shows all commercial a/c.
