Static Line Parachutes

Hi all in US glider land,

does anybody know if there are static line parachutes available in the
US? They are pretty common in Europe but I have not seen them here. Is
anyone using them over here?

Are you referring to sport parachutes or emergency pilot parachutes?

Are you referring to the parachutes themselves, or the harness/
container systems they get packed in and deployed from?

I've not seen a conventional system that could not be deployed with a
static line -- afaik they are all manufactured the same, so I'm
curious about what you've seen in Europe.

yes, I was referring to emergency chutes used in gliders.
When I was a student in the old country, we used to have the
Brueggemann & Brand (now Mertens) back pack types, that had the static
line packed in the back. The line was about 20ft long and got attached
to the hard points of the glider (the red rings installed in most
European gliders). If you have a look at http://www.fallschirm.de/index-Dateien/Page692.htm,
you can see a static line type chute that is used with a harness and
one chair-chute type, that is shown with a conversion kit to make it a
static line chute.
I am looking for a US manufacturer of this type of chutes.

Hi,

I believe that all parachute manufacturers can provide a Static Line as an
option.

I sell and use the Para-Phernalia "Softie" line. They offer the Static Line
option for $50 on any of their parachutes. Below is the text describing it
on my web site.

"This option consists of a static line that can be attached to the aircraft.
The static line pulls the rip cord so you don't need to. It is attached to
the D-ring and is approximately 25 feet long. The factory does not
recommend this option due to the possibility of entanglement but they will
make it if you are certain it is what you want. The existing parachute is
not altered in any way and can therefore be used with or without the static
line."

Static lines are not very popular in the USA. There have been some very
lengthy discussions of it here in the rec.aviation.soaring newsgroup. I
recommend that you search for the past postings. Below is a link to a

Personally, I wouldn't want to use one because I would want to get free and
clear of the glider and in a good spoon position (probably not the correct
term) before pulling the rip cord.
