Curious, what is the activity seen in the water just below the F-4?
It looks like something went into the water.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to ask that question. It is
call a "spar." It is a device towed by the carrier. It is used as a target
for practice bombing runs.

You're one up on me. I'd have guessed that the pilot was dumping
unexpended ordnance, prior to trapping aboard.

Dave,
That little bit of trivia came as the result of all those years serving on
five different carriers.
If you look carefully you can see the spar trailing behind the USS
Constellation.

Thanks for the info, was the spar always towed by the carrier - or farmed
out to other boats as well ?

Let me tell you, if I was the Commander of a multi-million dollar
aircraft carrier, I certainly wouldn't want F-4s or anybody else
dropping weapons 600 feet behind my ship, I don't care how big the
target is.
It may be called a "spar", or "Fanfare" or "CATS", but I believe it to
be a noisemaker, primarily intended to lure acoustic torpedos away
from the ships screws while it is unable to manoeuvre.
