I'm planning a trip from northern Michigan to San Antonio, Texas in
February. Any suggestions on GA fields in the area? I fly a C182.

Stinson (SSF) is pretty active for GA, I believe from talking to a
pilot who flies out of SA, but I haven't flown in there myself.
Close by SA is New Braunfels, to the north east.

I've heard that the Kerrville airport is a really nice, first class
operation but is a little ways from S.A. maybe about the same distance
as previously-mentioned New Braunfels (which is where I got my primary
instruction).
I was born & raised in San Antonio and the last time I was at S.A.
International it was very active for General aviation, although it's
the hub of airline activity for S.A. as well. My dad did all the Tx.
Taildragger certification testing there as well as flying Howard 250s
& 500s and all manner of small G.A. including his Pitts. This was
during the 70s through late 80s though and the airport probably has
grown a lot along with the rapidly-growing city.

Stinson is in the city on the south side. It's a part time Class D
operation. Boerne Stage (5C1) is off I-10 just north of town and is a
typical small GA pilot controlled airfield. Kerrville is quite a ways
NW of San Antonio as is New Braunfels only NE. I'm based at 5C1 and
highly recommend it.

Thanks everyone...
From the sectionals and AFD, it looks like KBAZ or 5C1 would suit my
needs nicely. My friends live on the northern side of San Antonio, so
transportation is less of an issue to the north.

Agree that KSAT and KSSF are the most convenient. Stinson is the
cheaper of the two, but is on he South side. Both have mechanics on
field, just in case you need 'em.

Its been a few years, but I've taken an Arrow into SAT (San Antonio Int)
and parked at Beechcraft/Ratheon. Prolly not cheap. But its closer in to
town than anything else, and on the north side.
With regards to Stinson, San Antonio Int, New Braunsfels, Hondo... just
go to the one closest to where you are trying to get to. All have pretty
good services - car, runways, etc.

Doesn't Boerne Stage now charge a $15/day ramp & parking fee for
transients? (according to AirNav)
It's been several years since I was last there, haven't been back
there since I got a considerable amount of water in the 100LL I
bought there and was kinda miffed at that, since it delayed my
departure and I was needing to beat the weather that was moving in...
I had to sump my tanks several times after letting it sit for almost
half an hour before I was satisfied I had gotten all the water out.
The guys in the FBO weren't all that friendly either. Maybe things
have changed over the past few years... I dunno, but I haven't been
back to see.
I've never been there, but Bulverde (1T8) is also on the north side of
SA.
Last time I was down there, I used New Braunfels since I have friends
there who loaned me their old pickup for ground transportation, but
landed at Kestrel Airpark (1T7) for the cheap fuel.
Kestrel is a really neat little private airpark, the runway was
rather interesting. I don't know about overnight parking since it's a
private strip, but the folks I met there sure seemed really friendly.
New Braunfels would be a bit of a hassle to use for access to the
greater SA area, if you had to depend on renting a car once you got
there.

My Dad flies his C182 into KSAT all the time and thinks highly of the
experience. You have to watch yourself because you'll be landing side
by side with heavies but in the times I flown with him I've never felt
that ATC in any way resented a little plane mixing in with the
commercial traffic.

What is the tiny asphalt airstrip / airport just a stone's throw from
S.A. International? My dad & I used to fly models there and I remember
seeing the traffic coming & going from KSAT while we were there. It
may not be there anymore as it was SO close to KSAT. I'll go look at
an online sectional to see & report back.
Often I was posted as the "airplane guard" while my dad was flying his
models to watch for the real thing approaching the field.

Twin Oaks (T94) is 2nm North of KSAT. I don't believe they get much
transient traffic.

Yeah! Twin Oaks...REAL close to KSAT. 67% transient traffic according
to what I just read.
