Sorry but I don't get it at all. Why was it even published in the
first place?

It's a TV Station News blog. Te reporter liked the picture. He thought
it was cool. It's not like they ran it on the front page of the NYT.

I see, a 'cool' cloud formation. It must really suck to be him. A
pity he can't imagine something more important to tell the masses
about ... (Like why more men die from prostate cancer than women from
breast cancer)

I agree, but to be fair I've taken a few pics of waht I thought were cool
cloud formations and they always look like crap in the photos.

Well spanky as soon as you get that NIH grant and perform the research
and write the peer reviewed article (oh wait, you'll need to spend
about 10 years in school first) then he can report on it.
Must suck to be so devoid of appreciation for beauty that you'd rag on
someone who does.

Your skill or lack of skill as a photographer has nothing to do with it.
Your posts in this thread seem to show that because you don't like the
photo that the guy at the TV station is in someway lesser than you for
posting it and anyone that did find it "cool" is in some way not as
smart as you.

No you are mistaken, I don't actively dislike the photo. The use of
'cool' and 'incredible' just adds to the yawn really. I could
understand the 'cool' better if it were a remarkable (or even
incredible) photo for composition or execution but that's not the
case. It's just a snap someone took and which someone else fills their
column inches with to garner their pay. So, as I look at it I see no
effort/skill in taking it or publishing it, just something to fill
column inches and maybe avoid having some really informative
publishing. If I am uncool for saying it as I see it then so be it,
but my opinion is no less for its honesty. I'd like to suggest that a
bit more honest criticism of the press could go a long way to fixing
some of the canker in today's society.

"I don't like it" and "why was it even posted" are not even remotely
equivalent. To state your opinion is fine, but to act like it's unworthy
of being displayed because you don't like it is, to say the least, rather
odd.

You are of course welcome to tell the masses about it yourself, and I doubt
you have any information that might indicate what he can or "can't imagine"
It was a freakin' PHOTOGRAPH for fcksake. If you would rather view photos

Well, I have a degree in technical journalism, studied under a two-time
Pulitzer-winning editor, I'm a former reporter, layout editor and
editor-in-chief for civilian and military publications, I've been paid for
photographs, assigned photographs and hired and fired photographers a couple
of times too.
It means nothing. But I'm definately not jealous or bitter.
You're welcome to disagree that a particular photo is "cool", but, really,
so f'cking what what you think? The difference between photos of clouds
and your "yawning" is that private, instrument and commecial students study
and are expected to understand different types of weather.
Also, those of us who fly in the same region in which the photo was taken
will find it applicable to our understanding of local weather patterns. I
assure you that your own gloominess and wind is not at all relevant to
aviation here.
Hope that clears it up. Have a nice day.

I gotta go with "you are making a mountain out of a mole-hill."
It is an unusual picture for those of us that are not in that area. I bet I
can find some pictures of clouds around here that you might think are cool.
Anyway, there isn't anything to get so worked up over. Someone though
something was worth sharing, and did so. If you don't think it is worth
looking at, don't look at it. Simple as that. Other people can also make
up their own minds.

I mean he taught me. Since you find this "interesting," his name is Jon
Franklin and he was my advisor, media history and ethics instructor, and
endorsed my Bachelor of Science degree in journalism.

In terms of photojournalism, see:

I had classes with Zwahlen, Lovell AND Folts. Lovell and Franklin were my

A B.Sc. in journalism is quite unusual. At most Unis. it's a B.A. -
including MD or was it a double major of some sort?
With their mentorship of such esteemed writers and reporters, I have
to admit to being dismayed at the vitriol you have published in other
groups. If you cooled down, I think you would see the virtue in trying
to understand others POV's so you may see merit in other ideas -
including why I object to journalistic opium.

Negative. When Franklin took over the OSU Department of Journalism he'd
declared he'd seen enough junk science in the media (the apple Alar scare
being a prime example of the day) and required that every journalism student
enroll in and complete a science minor. A B.A. would probably be more
marketable, but, what can you do? For my senior project I had to
translate a scientific dissertation on the cardiovascular benefits of oat
fiber versus wheat bran. It turns out that there are things in the world
more tedious than watching paint dry. And since you're dying to know, it
doesn't make a difference which you eat.

If it's the political forum, I've met most of those guys in person and we've
been playing smashmouth usenet since the late '90s. In other cases, they
probably simply weren't worth my best. ;>

Unusual degree that. Most Uni's only offer a B.A. in Journalism.
I would hope that their esteemed teaching would have rubbed off,
particularly about listening and trying to see the other's POV's -mine
being about opiate journalism. Of course it one's sole raison d'etre
is to fill column inches then we all lose.

Excellent idea.

I could have told them that but junk epidemiology also fills column
inches.

Then you sell yourself short. If, by cool reason, you can turn even
one braincell on in the audience then we all win. Profanity does
little more than cover the speaker with excrement and amuse the peanut
gallery.
Good luck with your endeavors.
