Can someone ID this airplane?

No, not the gyro in front of it, the plane behind the gyro with the
twin boon. Three brownie point to the first enthusiast able to ID
this plane.

Thanks,

Do they have it confused with a Sparrowhawk autogyro?

The gyro pictured is definitely *not* a Sparrowhawk gyroplane! If
there's a fixed-wing Sparrowhawk, I'd like to know about it and see
what it looks like. That plane behind the Bensen gyro really looks
kinda nice.

It appears to be based on a Benson Gyrocopter.

I have no idea what this particular exterior may have been called.

There is a Sparrowhawk sailplane built by Windward-Performance;
http://www.windward-performance.com/photvid.php?showId=2&showSubmit=View+Slides
however, it is nothing line the bird in the background of the Bensen gyro
photo.

As far as the Gyro goes, someone was kind enough to label the photo
Montegomerie Benson B8MR, and just in case there was any confusion, they
painted Montegomerie Benson in four or five inch tall letters on the
fuselage. The registration number listed on the picture title and
aircraft itself lead to registration records that state Montegomerie
Benson B8MR as the make and there is an accident report on it that in
addition to the model, states that it is powered by a Rotax, so there
should be no mystery surrounding the Gyro ;')

Mighty close Carles, but I think it is not the Sadler Vampire.

There's a couple of people saying it is the Sparrow Hawk, but I
haven't gotten a confirmation yet.

At the bottom it states that it is a Sparrowhawk and as one of three it
is to be rebuilt to flying condition and the other two were sent back to
the US. A Sparrowhawk search turns up the Curtis fighter or the Gyro by
Groen Bros. Also a search for Swanton Morely airfield shows it was
closed in 1999.

I think Phillippe and Anyolmouse are the definite winners. I dug up an
image using the wayback machine and it is a pretty definite match for
the Sparrow Hawk. Looks real close to the Sadler machine, particularily
the military version, but the Sparrow Hawk is a dead ringer. I heard
Sadler was bringing the Vampire back under LSA rules. It looks like a
neat ship.

Hi again Charles,

Sorry I mistyped your name that time. Yes it does look like a nice
ship, that's what caught my attention. I still can't find any picture
of the Sparrow Hawk. Where did you find the picture at?

Thanks again,

I would rather have just one good brownieW/nuts. The key to finding the
picture was a search for Chuck Herbst after finding out he was the
designer. This produced the N# which led to the picture by Keith Sowter.
I had already emailed Keith asking if he had any additional information
on the Sparrow Hawk. I received his reply this AM:

Thanks for your Interest in my photograph

This was one of three such aircraft , Aero Dynamics Sparrow Hawk Mk.II,
that were imported into the UK in the Mid 1980's - I first saw them as a
group in a Hangar at Swanton Morley .

I believe that only one was made airworthy, N8728A, - here is a photo of
it that I took at an air show at Norwich

http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1082359/

The owners of the Sparrowhawk were present when I took the picture of
the Bensen and stated that they "could'nt remember the Registration" at
that time , They stated that the other two airframes had returned to the
USA.

It was their intention to restore the aircraft to flyiong condition.

Hope this helps

Keith

The Sparrow Hawk is a project, I worked on in our shop back in 2005.
This Sparrow Hawk was bought from
a owner in the midwest, with both tail booms damaged from a hard flare
tail first landing. We installed new tail booms
and rebuilt many parts for it. I talked to the owner about it from
Iowa last night and it is going to be a project for him
when he retires.

The owner of the one in the picture is from the state of Washington.
He also said that only 3 were built.

A picture of a Vampire was in the last GA News, page 14, at the LSA
Sebring, Fla. Fly-in.

If any one wants any other information about it call or write me.
