View Full Version : A Farewell Speech to the ABPA.

Hello Gang,
In this newsgroup over the past 15 years or so I have been a lurker, a poster, a mega poster, and then back to being a super silent lurker. During this time on several occasions I have been privileged to meet some of the members of this newsgroup in person, and I was honored to be asked to write a guide for this newsgroup (and weathered an incredible storm of protests regarding it). Unfortunately though the time has come for me to do a bit of personal budget crunching and cancel my subscription to the Giganews news service. In the distant future as my fortunes change, and shift I may make return, but don't count on it, on the other hand count against it either....
It may seem a touch melodramatic making a statement about my departure, and some will question the need for me to publicly say it. But the last time I vanished for several months, someone spread a tale that I was dead, and I don't want a encore performance of that. It was rather disconcerting to have E-mails bouncing all over the place asking if I was truly dead.
I may lurk for a day or two longer, as I think I have a few days left on this month's subscription but sadly the time has come to say good bye.
So happy aircraft chasing, and I wish the best of luck to the ABPA and all it's members...

Thanks for all your contributions. We can probably both remember
when this group was created as an off-branch of the vehicles binary
group in the mid 1990's. In my opinion it is one of the finest groups
in all Usenet, remarkably free of politics, flamefests, porno postings,
flooders and commercial spam.
I too resented being forced into Giganews when my ISP abruptly
cancelled usenet access, but it is a cost I have found worth it. Do
come back if your circumstances change.

on-going source of both inspiration & good advice to this long time

Have a look at the free news servers listed at:
http://www.disenter.com/
I've used the Maxwell server in the past although I don't know if
it still carries abpa.
Alternatively try Teranews. For a one-off payment of $3.95, they
give you a daily download allowance of 50Mb. Unfortunately, you
won't be able to post but you can happily lurk for free after that.
I handed over my $3.95 to them three or four years ago when my ISP
was having serious problems with Usenet and I had no complaints
with the service. Although I no longer need it, I still have the
same account and use it fairly regularly - so I'm certainly getting
value for money (and still have no complaints).
For me, it's been $3.95 well spent (and, apart from being a
customer, I have no connection with Teranews).

All the best to you, Andrew. Make sure you are firmly belted while hanging out of hel;icopter doors and take care. Let's hope you sell lots of photos so that you can resume your Giganews account.

I am able to post using my (almost) free Teranews account. It is a good
backup for my sometimes erratic ISP. That was $3.95 well spent.
Yes, this is a great group. I don't post here much and I don't know
anything about aviation, but I when I come here I see people doing something
they enjoy.

Many thanks to all of you for your very kind comments, and E-mails...
I have begun investigating some of the free or cheaper services offered for NG access. So perhaps my departure may not be as long lasting as I had originally thought. The issue that comes into play though at the moment is how little I actually use the NGs versus their value to me. If I chose to I could afford the monthly fee I pay to Giganews, however at the moment I have a one too many things going that "I can afford to do". And as I need to coast with my finances for a little while the NGs lose.
Again many thanks gang, it really has been privilege, and an honor to know so many of you...
