February 21st 08, 04:21 PM
Hello,

Does anyone know if NJ applies a sales tax on used gliders that are
purchased out of state. I know there is a sales tax at motor vehicles
when the trailer is registered.

Thanks

The State of NJ thought about it and decided not to charge tax on the
glider I imported last year. I didn't call the State of NJ and tell
them I bought a glider; they found me after the aircraft was
registered with the FAA, and eventually told me that they didn't need
any tax on it.

New Jersey expects residents who purchase items for use in the state
of NJ to pay
use tax.
I have avoided this due to the fact that my gliders met the following
criteria:
1) They are not, nor will they be based or "used" in the state of NJ.
I fly in NY.
They will expect to see hanger rent or staorage bill demonstrating
this.
2) Delivery was taken outside the state.
Based upon these, I have argued that the glider was not purchased FOR
USE in the
state of NJ.
3 The last 3 times I have done so, no tax was required to be paid.
Good Luck
