View Full Version : Rotax questions
I have some questions for Rotax users of 503, and 582 (583?) engines
who do their own maintenance.
1) How many special tools do you need to tear down these engines?
2) What are common problems encountered with the 2 stroke series?
3) Do they require consistent tinkering or are they pretty much good
for the duration of the 300 hour TBO?
Thanks

Only a couple, wrist pin bearings are cageless. There is a tool to retain
pins.
Nothing like wondering if you got them all after you dump them down the
case.
And a gear puller.

The User is the biggest problem. Don't modify in anyway. Just use the
recommended
Stock jetting and carb settings, Use only the Manufactured recommend Pre-mix
and Gearbox oils.
Its when people think they know better and go outside extacly what the
manufacture recommends
is when they run into problems and start complaining about 2 strokes.

No there are very dependable and consistant.
If you follow #2 and follow the manufactures inspect schedule, the bottom
end has no
problems going 400 hrs

By ALL MEANS, for goodness sake, LISTEN to this bit of advice, if you
ignore EVERYTHING else. (not that you should ignore everything else; just
pay attention to this one-don't use something else "close" to the right oil)
I know for a fact that failure to use the __exact__ Rotax gearbox oil can
cause you to ruin the bottom end of your engine. BTDT.
