I'm aware of three people I've known in my life that attempted suicide, and
sadly one was successful. None of them were attempting to escape physical
pain or fiscal trauma. Sometimes the worst enemy a person has is inside
their mind. :-(

Quite so - the so called "demons" that haunt them.

So sad; they give up so soon they never fulfill their promise.

Van Meter made national headlines in 1993 and 1994 when she made
her cross-country and trans-Atlantic flights accompanied only by a
flight instructor. Her instructors said she was at the controls
during the entirety of both flights.

As a sixth-grader in September 1993, Van Meter flew from Augusta,
Maine, to San Diego over five days. She had to fight strong
headwinds and turbulence that bounced her single-engine Cessna 172
and made her sick.

At the time, she was believed to be the youngest girl to fly
across the United States; the record was later broken.

Nine months later, Van Meter flew from Augusta to Glasgow,
Scotland, and was credited with being the youngest girl to make a
trans-Atlantic flight. She battled dizziness brought on by high
altitude and declared upon landing: "I always thought it would be
real hard and it was."

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DEFD91730F93BA15757C0A9629582 60&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all
Vicki, who is 12, will be at the controls of a single-engine
plane. No girl so young has ever piloted a plane across the
Atlantic. Her instructor will be next to her in the cockpit, for
regulations prohibit a pilot under 16 from flying solo. But Vicki
plans to handle every aspect of the flight -- navigation,
communications, fuel calculations, takeoffs, landings and long
hours in the air at about 7,000 feet above the ocean -- by
herself. ...

One day in the fall of 1992, she and her father, Jim, a
stockbroker, drove in the family van to the local airport to see
the new terminal. Mr. Van Meter, who owned a small plane years ago
and sold it to put his wife, Corinne, through college, spotted an
advertisement for a new flight school. He suggested to Vicki that,
since she wanted to be an astronaut, she might want to take a
flying lesson to see if she liked being in the air. ...

Her plane for the trans-Atlantic flight will be a Cessna 210,
which seats six and travels at about 180 miles an hour. The plane
has retractable landing gear, a first for Vicki. ...

The Van Meters will follow their daughter across the Atlantic in a
twin-engine plane chartered by the British Broadcasting
Corporation, which is making a documentary of Vicki's flight. She
already has television experience as a result of her cross-country
flight. Vicki's parents need no prompting to show videotapes of
her on the talk-show circuit, chatting and joking easily with
Bryant Gumbel, Chevy Chase, Maury Povich, Conan O'Brien, John and
Leeza.

The family is also eager to show a visitor framed photographs of
Vicki with the many celebrities she has met, including Vice
President Al Gore, who gave Vicki's entire class a tour of the
White House.

"We're just regular people, and we never expected any of this,"
Mr. Van Meter says.

Vicki herself says all the attention has been "sort of exciting,
really neat." She adds: "I'm doing this for the challenge, not for
the publicity. When I started flying, I never even thought I would
ever go up to Erie, 30 miles north of us."

Vicki has logged more than 100 hours in the air, plus 60 hours in
ground school. The Van Meters have spent more than $10,000 on her
flying lessons, with money they had put away for her college
education. Vicki's father says he hopes the investment pays off
with her appointment to the Naval Academy, which has already sent
her sweatshirts and T-shirts.

Amy Johnson, in 1930 became the first woman to fly solo from Britain
to Australia, was 26 with about as many hours as Van Meters:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Johnson

Personally, I see these children piloting stunts as pure Barnum &
Bailey. Look at what happened to Jessica (the child pilot) Dubroff:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,984546,00.html?promoid=googlep
JESSICA DUBROFF'S LAST FLIGHT In the beginning it may have been
the father's idea for Jessica Dubroff to make the cross-country
trip at the age of seven [NATION, April 22], but she loved to fly.
Whether she made the flight for the world record or simply for the
love of flying, the choice was ultimately left up to her.

Your scathing article "fly till i die" was right on the money.
What a heroic indictment of child exploitation. Young Jessica had
absolutely no freedom of choice regarding her right to life,
liberty or the pursuit of a normal education. Most of her
teachings came from her self-appointed guru mom Lisa Hathaway,
who, in a supposed quest to give her daughter freedom, imbued
Jessica with Hathaway's own airhead philosophy. No wonder the kid
wanted to fly! It makes no sense for Hathaway to call a nose dive
to the ground a "state of joy."

The pint-size bicycle with training wheels, pictured in the
forefront of your photograph of Jessica checking "her" plane,
speaks volumes.

Very sad, you wonder if her record setting early life led to an unfulfilling
adult life, the downer after the high.

I sometimes wonder in situations like this if they were driven when they were
young to do record breaking things and the pressure lead to the depression.
However I suspect the real answer has to do with the chemistry of the brain and
that pressures and achievement probably didn't have that much to do with it.
It'd be instructive to look back through her family's history to see if
depression runs through their line.

That being said, I fully expect that her record breaking flights had more to do
with Momma and Papa's ambitions and dreams than anything she really wanted to
do. Just conjecture on my part....

My completely uneducated, wild guess is that the above mentioned achievement
is a result of that same chemistry.

I'm fairly certain you're right. Behind these "young pilot flights"
there are usually adult people with an agenda. The flights are "hyped"
as the child making all the decisions where in actuality the CFI with
them is legally and in all other respects piolt in command of the aircraft.
Anyone believing for a nano-second that some CFI is going to just sit
there and allow a child to make a life and death decision concerning
fuel vs winds vs routing for an over the ocean flight in a single engine
plane where that CFI is going to be a "passenger" without correcting any
"mistakes" made by that child needs to look at ocean front property in
Death Valley.

The very premise for these "kiddie flights" is filled with potential for
mental problems later on down the line. The child reads the hype, is
privy to the publicity and hoopla, and as a child, at the time, I'm
fairly certain it all goes down easily. But later on, as the now older
adult realizes that all that transpired was NOT done by them at all but
totally under the direct supervision of other people, I see a tremendous
potential for depression related issues setting in.
It's a shame these children are used in this way.
Just my totally unqualified 2 cents as an amatuer Psychologist.

True, though few of those kill themselves.

There were other factors at work and I can't pretend to guess the
motivations in this case.

A sad fact is that the group most at risk is the least likely to get
media exposure -- white, middle-aged males: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/19/us/19suicide.html

That's a rare occurrence.

People kill themselves for a variety of "reasons," few of them
rational.

Which is why it's hard for those of us thinking rationally to
understand "why."

All sad, and selfish.

The article says she battled depression and opposed medication. It
doesn't say whether or not she was still flying, but I wonder if she
opposed medication because it would mean the loss of her pilot's
license.

One of the huge problems associated with these kids who are hyped up in
the public eye by their parents early on in their lives is that later
on, the child can't fulfill on the hype and in effect finish the "story".

This can leave a child, now a young adult, with a deep sense of failure
which "aint good" by any definition.

In the case of this young lady, the odds of her actually becoming the
astronaut she was hyped up as desiring to become, and presented to the
world as the reason for her learning to fly were an odds on built in
failure to begin with. The competition for these jobs is so intense she
would have had to become a superior product far exceeding her hype in
order to even have had a chance at acheiving that goal.

I see a tremendous potential for depression and feeling of failure in
all this, and I can only hope that those who perpetrated the events that
led to this young lady's ultimate decision to take her life have learned
an extremely painful lesson and that those parents who come after ths
event learn as well from this tragedy.

Did she ever go on to get her license in the first place. There is only
one person with the last name Van Meter in data base and his was issued
in 1955.

Avweb had a story about anti-depressants and flying in Austrailia. Why they
are not allowed by the FAA I don't understand, I would think a
"non-depressed" pilot would be safer than a depressed pilot which the study
does show.

Antidepressant drugs are not simple "un-depressers."

They affect various physiological and psychological processes -- some
barely understood.

I'm with the FAA on this one.

So you think it is better for a pilot to hide his/her depression and not get
medicated? I think that is a bigger liability than the drugs are but that is
my opinion and the study from Australia supports that.

I did not say that.

I said "(antidepressants) affect various physiological and

Someone who is clinically depressed shouldn't be flying, with or
without medication.

There lies the problem, if a commercial pilot was depressed but didn't want
to lose his job he would most likely continue flying depressed and not tell
anyone. It isn't a very good situation to put a person, either tell your
employer your problem and most likely lose your certificate so you can get
on medication OR not tell anyone so you can keep flying, yet still be
depressed.

This logic is flawed, because it assumes:
1) that the person has no options then to continue flying depressed,
2) that antidepressants are mere "un-depressors" and therefore
relatively benign.

The CFRs prohibit a pilot who possesses a current medical certificate
from performing crewmember duties while the pilot has a known medical
condition or increase of a known medical condition that would make the
pilot unable to meet the standards for the medical certificate.

People who are clinically depressed have all sorts of short-circuits
in their thinking, prime among them a severe lack of interest in
consequences.

So "flying while depressed" or "hiding it" is illegal and stupid.

Masking these symptoms with antidepressants is not the long term
answer for pilots or non-pilots. Psychiatrists expect these drugs to
be used to help people through the depression until they are able to
work through the causations rationally.

Just because "lots of people" are popping these pills and "are ok"
does not warrant a change to the cautious approach of the CFRs.

I've noticed that in all of the articles I've read that detail her
background, the acquisition of a pilots license is conspicuously absent. No
big surprise there. Just another indication that the parents were probably
more interested in these stunts than their daughter.

Having worked with hundreds of young athletes in over 30 sports, most
high achievers, I can tell you that the number of depressed young
adults, teenagers and subteens was alarming. The parents of these
athletes were nearly always the center for the blame either setting
goals that were unrealistic or supporting goals that were relatively
unachievable.

It's a sad commentary on our American society today, this tragedy being
the tip of a hidden iceberg of problems.

That's a mis-characterization of my remarks.

There's a difference between arguing that antidepressants should not
be acceptable for pilots and that I am somehow preventing "people from
getting help."

That isn't what I implied, I was trying to say that the rules being what
they are force pilots to make a decision that may not be the best for all
involved, that is all.

That's interesting. When I searched the FAA Airmans database, it
returned over 50 records, but none in the USA with a first name
beginning with 'Vic'. The V VAN METER you found

VERNON HOWARD VAN METER
DOI: 7/19/1955
Certificate: PRIVATE PILOT
Rating(s):
PRIVATE PILOT
AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE LAND
DOI: 4/25/1955
Certificate: MECHANIC
Rating(s):
MECHANIC
AIRFRAME
POWERPLANT

isn't her father; his name is Jim. But there are two Van Meter
records in Pennsylvania:

ELGIN VAN METER
DOI: 7/19/1955
Certificate: PRIVATE PILOT
Rating(s):
PRIVATE PILOT
AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE LAND
AIRPLANE SINGLE ENGINE SEA

ROBIN VAN METER
DOI: 11/26/2004
Certificate: FLIGHT ATTENDANT
Rating(s):
FLIGHT ATTENDANT
GROUPII

It's interesting that Vernon and Elgin both had their certificates
issued on the same day. Perhaps that's just an epoch date for the
database?

JFK Jr's record is still in the database, so it's not an issue of the
records of the deceased being purged. An applicant for an airplane
student pilot certificate must be 16, so Vicki had no certificate when
she made her record setting flights. But she was honored as a pilot:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicky_van_Meter
In 2003 she was featured with 36 other female pilots in the
traveling exhibit Women and Flight — Portrait of Contemporary
Women Pilots.[9][10], based on a book of the same name by Carolyn
Russo.[11]

She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova after graduating
from Edinboro University with a degree in criminal justice. She
worked as an insurance company investigator and had made plans to
pursue graduate studies.[6] Van Meter died at her home in
Meadville on March 15, 2008 from a self-inflicted gunshot
wound.[1] Her death surprised her family who believed she had been
coping with her depression. She was 26.

Vicki Van Meter at 12.
She was also one of 37 pilots featured in "Women and Flight --
Portraits of Contemporary Women Pilots," a traveling exhibition
now showing at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

I guess you'll have to read her book (or ask her flight instructor Bob
Baumgartner) to see if she ever earned her airmans certificate:

Yeah, that could be. Pilots are still expected to just suck it up and
keep their mouths shut, which might be a tragic paradox. It suggests that
there might be suicidal people flying who might otherwise be safe and
treatable except they don't want that one last great thing taken from them.

It's a tough issue, and I can see both sides of it. I am glad that
there are studies underway to try to really determine whether or not
these drugs have effects relevant to flying. Given the social stigmas
about psychological problems, I suspect the FAA is a little more
likely to reject these drugs than other types of medication. What we
need is some objective studies so we know what we are really dealing
with.

That is strange. I just ran the search again and got over 50 results as
well. In both cases I used "Van Meter" in the last name field as the
only search string.

I did notice that they seem to have done some changes to the the FAA.GOv
site between yesterday morning and now maybe I caught it in an update
glitch.

I might use a nom de plume on the internet but I never bull**** on what I do for
a living. Why bother?

Anybody who wants to know my real name needs only to email a question or comment
to me. I use my real name exclusively in email.

So we're back to the basic question: why be so coy about your profession?

Did you read the thread?

There's no presumed, implied, or even hinted profession, only
reasonable responses.

His implication is that one must be a "doctor" to make any statements
about the known or unknown effects of anti-depressants.

If that's the case I need a vet to tell me he's full of crap.

Yes, which flies in the face of "antidepressants are mere

Since you quoted (intentionally, certainly) out of context, I'll
clarify that I argued *against* the notion that "antidepressants are
mere "un-depressors" and therefore relatively benign."

Mama and Papa's ambitions and dreams sometimes have a tendency to
expand beyond all reasonable bounds. Attainment of some great
achievement only fuels the desire in some parents for even greater
conquests to hang in the parents' trophy rooms. Sooner or later a
child, who must always remain a child to such parents, realizes that
she will not only never be able to accomplish everything her parents
demand, but she will never become an adult with control over her own
life.

Raised from birth to believe that your only purpose in life is to
fulfill the goals your parents set for you, you eventually are faced
with a terrible choice: either you will never meet all these goals, or
you will meet them and be left with no more purpose in life. Either
way, you are left with no ability to set your own goals or make your
own choices, no sense of self-worth other than what your parents see in
you, and no future of your own making. This is the legacy of the overly
ambitious parent.

Interestingly, you can often see the same sort of thing in the children
of alcoholics. They also often grow up with an overly developed sense
of duty that leaves them with no ability to make decisions on their
own. Everything is measured against what will please their parents or,
later in life, someone or some organization that will substitute for
their parents. Eventually, the parents or the parent substitute will
fail them. Left with no definition of self, they sink into depression,
alcoholism, or even suicide.

That would be a good idea, and something like that should happen.
That said, I think it would probably be fairly easy to test things
like reaction time and hand-eye coordination of people on anti-
depressants. But how do you test the effect of these drugs on pilot
judgment? For that matter, how do you test any drug's impact on pilot
judgment? I suspect that there are plenty of medications approved for
pilots where no research has been done on the drug's overall impact on
flying. But for drugs unrelated to psychological conditions, the FAA
is probably less likely to consider the drug a problem. Without real
data, it's just guesswork.

Maybe looking at the accident statistics in countries where anti-
depressants aren't outlawed for pilots is the right way to go. There
you get evidence of the overall effect of these drugs on flying.

The real culprit in all this isn't the actual test data that can or
can't be obtained unfortunately.
In the United States, we have a legal system built up by lawyers that
over shadow everything even remotely connected with a pilot's health.
The ever present threat of tremendous lawsuits against operators who can
be shown to have allowed a pilot to continue flying while under ANY
medication has and will continue to cause pilots, especially
professional pilots to go underground for needed treatment and medication.
This is a highly dangerous situation. The rub in it is that it isn't the
actual effect of a medication that causes this fear in both pilots and
operators hiring them. It's the ability of the lawyers to SELL a jury
that dictates the fear.
Lawyers in the United States have in my opinion made flying less safe
than it could be through this intimidation of the industry. Pilots who
could be treated and medicated and allowed down time with no penalty are
in many cases keeping quiet rather than risk potential career ending
actions.

The standard for negligence is conduct which an "ordinary reasonable man"
would or would not do under similar circumstances. There are some nuances
which might apply to the violation of a legislative or administrative
standard which might apply, but that was historically the standard. The
problem is that conduct is not judged on the reasonable man standard, but
whether anyone could possibly think of a better way, which is almost always
the case given the benefit of years of hindsight. If we adopted the
original intent, with respect to everything from our founding documents to
common law negligence, we might be able to end the tyranny of endless
legislating and lawyering.

In the world created by lawyers that we live in today in the United
States, there need be no negligence. In fact, there need be no just
cause for litigation whatsoever for litigation to take place.

All that is needed for the American lawyer to initiate litigation is
opportunity. From that point on, the game is played out through
intimidation, collusion, and extortion toward those targeted. The target
being thus threatened, must hire lawyers to defend. It's a feeding
frenzy for the lawyers.

This simply completes the "pre-trial" phase for the modern American lawyer.

If that doesn't fill their pockets with gold, they go to court. At that
point, it's nothing more than a sales job on the juries. The lawyers who
are the best salesman are the most successful.

The above has become so prevalent in America, that to continue
projecting the concept of justice and fair play into the American legal
discussion may very well be naive.

Suicide is a 30 second bad decision, somtimes its just that simple. Thats
why you should always be careful what you say to friends and family, or
anyone for that matter.

Please understand I am not arguing that this issue is simple or
trivial.

But I will argue that the popular notion that antidepressents are
merely "un depressers" is nonsense.

Many people who have been on these for years, even though the intent
of these medications is to block darker, more pernicious thoughts from
doing the person in before they can get help that actually addresses
the root problems. In other words, it's meant to be a temporary fix.

The labelling that accompanies these drugs is multiple pages long, in
which a host of subtle and not-so-subtle effects and side effects,
some known, some unknown, is described.

How we handle professional pilots who are depressed is a completely
different issue.

To do so would be to over simplify the subject.

Not necessarly so.

My understanding is that many people have a chemical imbalance in the brain
(oversimplified neurochemical analysis) that makes them pre-disposed to
depression. Anti-depressents help to make these chemical imbalances closer
to normal, or to help the brain function closer to normal, at least.

Many people with the problem with chemical imbalances manage to function
normally, given that there are no extrordinary stresses on the person. If
these stresses reach a certain point, depression can start to become a
problem.

Depression is a real thing. I have seen others struggle with it. The side
effects of the drugs are documented, but in my opinion, the effects of
depression are even more serious.

My understanding of the workings of antidepressants say that to people that
need them, they are worth it. Far better to fly with them, than to fly
without them, and being filled with the burden of depression.

We are in violent agreement.

The point of contention is much more narrow -- are the effects of anti-
depressant medications predictable enough in each individual that the
evident behavior is within the "normal" range expected to pilot an
airplane?

If so, then why not?
If not, then caution trumps hope.

An old ... friend ... of theirs appears to have returned after about a
seven year hiatus. I'm just not sure how much time he has to play yet.
Back in '99 or so their interaction had somehow spilled over into the
vjiking froup, which was part of how I got involved there.

Sadly, after monitoring them for a bit I've found that the froup has
pretty much been abandoned. Maybe four or five poasts a day instead of
several hundred. I guess they lost interest when MOUL pulled out.

The asatru froup? They all moved toa moderated one that Djirkie set up,
badly. He didn't propogate it correctly so there were loads of entry
points that bypassed Herr Flick's moderation.

But he got me good with his "psionic weapon" though.

I was thinking of alt.ozdebate, but there's not much left of the
vjiking froup, either.

As well as key providers that didn't pick it up at all.

I still wonder how Djirkie justified his abject cowardice to his
'gods' - can you imagine Thor running from a fight and begging Odin to
save him like Djirkie & Co. did with teh B8MBis?

Not to mention his dishonesty in claiming credit when little Dougie did
all the heavy lifting. If'n I was him, I'd be installing a heck of a
lot of lightning rods...

He certainly has been good for a few laughs over the years.
