View Full Version : Reason #37 why flying in Mexico is more fun than the US

When a pilot overflys the town at 200 feet it means...
US - He's a danger to society and should be locked up. He's probably
also a national security risk.
Mexico - He would like a taxi to pick him up at the airport.

Is that true? If so, that is very cool! How many times I wish I
could have done that.

It used to be commonplace in the US, up to and including WW2 era.
I'm reading Doolittle's biography and to drum up interest in aviation
the air corp pilots did all kinds of stunts like that. Doolittle
relates of flights over New York City to generate interest in an air
show. Actually ... they were flights THROUGH New York City ... close
enough to the streets that the buildings towered above their planes.
I don't know whether to call that gutz or insanity. ;)

Its true as recently as yesterday. The funny thing is when you fly
over the town at 200 feet only a small percentage of people look up at
you.

That might have been ok when you only had to worry about trees. But
now you have antennas, guy wires and many other nearly invisible
objects.

Years back when I made regular flights down to Cabo, I'd clear via La
Paz and then fly low level down the Pacific side and around the tip of
Baja to go knife edge thru the cape rocks. Must have done it a hundred
times and never heard of anyone else doing it. Wouldn't do it now on a
bet with the increased population in Cabo.
When I ferried helicopters down to central and south america I'd often
land at the PEMEX stations to top off with diesel and no one ever
thought it odd. Hard to do that anymore.
And to top it off, I had some Mexican locals approach me to smuggle
parrots INTO Mexico from central america.
I guess I made more than 300 flights down to Cabo over an 8 year
period starting in the late 70's.
