View Full Version : The Joy Of Usenet: A message from 'Anonymous'

Dan[_10_]

Here's a message posted to my blog from the brave Mr "Anonymous":

"YOU are the same Dan from Usenet who has the audacity to claim hoew
****ing wonderful of a pilot you are when you don't have your CFI or a
plane that is worth a ****?"

[Editorial Note: I fly a Bonanza A36, a Bonanza 35 V tail, and C172s
and C182s.]

"Grow the **** up, McCormack. Google GrouperLooser."

[Has problems with spelling -- I'm guessing Mr Anonymous is 13, or
mildly retarded]

"PS. The most fun is watching that idiot FlyBoy kick your goddamned
asshole every other post. keep up the good werk. hahaha "

[It's spelled "work," -- but I'm sure he has little expereince with
the word.]

Well, this one is clearly a credit to himself, his parents, and his
minder.

Yeah, he tried the same crap with me. As well as that he tried forging
me here, whihc kind of blew up in his face. Frankly, even though he
wasn't a very good Bertie, I did appreciate the help.

God I love my k00ks! Jay has real promise.

One of the joys of these groups is that they are anonymous: it's
possible to put on display one's inner jerk, the true self. We shrinks
think the actions people take when they are not seen (or in this case
identified) are more a true measure of the worth than those taken when
being observed, or identified.

I agree. Having said that, I'm pretty much the same real life....

We have a professional message board elsewhere on the net and there was
a major discussion about a year ago involving my company. It was
hilarious watching some of the characters emerge. Great fun trying to
identify some of them, too. A couple were easy ( one who's called
"smithers" behind his back, for instance) Others, not so easy, but there
was much speculation in crew rooms afterwards. It was mostly the same
sort of thing you see here, but the added dimension of possibly sitting
next to one of the protaginists added some sauce to the whole thing.

That's sad. I may be jinxing things by saying this, but Mary and I have
never, ever faced anything like that, despite years of hosting the
rec.aviation party at OSH (known as the "HOPS Party", by the way, for
"Homebuilt, Owning, Piloting, and Student" -- it's always held on the
Wednesday during OSH -- more on that later), thousands of posts over the
last decade, and being as open and honest about who we are as can be.
Heck, with one click of my signature line, you can see my 800 number and
CALL me on MY nickel. (Which, delightfully, over the years many of you
have! It's been a great pleasure to speak with many newsgroupies, and
several have become good friends.)

Don't call today, though -- I'm not there! (We're off to look at an old
Ercoupe here shortly...)

I have never -- not once -- been faced with an impolite, rude, crude or
scary person in "real life" because of my participation on these groups,
although many have stayed at our hotel. On the contrary, I have met some of
the nicest, most knowledgeable people thanks to these groups -- and
(although the trolls have tried their best to ruin it) I expect that to
continue.

Sure, things can get pretty boisterous around here, and a good, heated
argument breaks out from time to time (as our recent back-and-forth XM
thread will attest) -- but generally pilots are a cut above the rest of
humanity (in my observation) and don't stoop to this sort of crap.

It says that we possess the courage and integrity to expose our true
selves to the slings and arrows of life, rather than cower in the
shadows in fear, or mask our identity from recognition to escape
responsibility for our behavior like a bandit.

No, it says that the poster has enough honor and integrity to stand behind

In the case of real arrows, that may be true. In the case of Usenet,
it's absurd and reveals a certain paranoia.

Indeed. A snipper is one who must conceal himself in order to escape

I do, but all are quite competent with shotgun, rifle, and handgun.

My 17 year old son would simply tear the eyeballs out of the punk with
his bare hands.

See above. No worries.

Gates, Hangar locks, lots of airport friends, and security patrols
help.

While anonymity can be beneficial, if you never **** anyone off in
life you're probably not doing enough.

I've had idiot threats before -- threats are empty. If they were as
tough/scary/vile as they want to seem they'd come on down.

Ain't gonna happen.

Not with your name, you don't. That's not standing behind them.

I've got plenty to protect...and I'm capable of doing so, without resorting
to cowering in the shadows.

No and no.

To borrow a line: "Bring it on."

My roomomate is as capable of protecting himself as I am. If neither of us
is home, then I'm not worried at all.

You'll run this risk whether or not you stand behind your words. Let's say
you **** off someone in traffic, and he follows you to the airport...

Anonymity merely encourages that. If you're not standing behind your words,
there's no need to keep them civil.

Perhaps, perhaps not. Life has risks. I'm not losing sleep over it; if
someone's determined enough to come to Fairmont, Minnesota to come after me,
there's not much that will deter him.

Good for you.

The point is that you run that risk every day, and it's much higher than the
risk someone will come across the country to attack you for what you say on
the net.

*ME*??!! I can't take myself too seriously. If I tried, things like this

Pay attention to, yes. Get scared out of doing things by, no.

Uhm, not particularly; South Park, to me, is little more than an excuse to
show 8-year-olds cussing like stevedores on national TV backed up by
terrible animation. I was referring to my "appearance" on this week's
episode. (Though I do wish they'd had me in to do the voice; the one they
gave me is rather badly wrong.)

That's not standing behind them. That's hiding from them.

True...for a good place to pick up the story, follow the link lebeled
Schlock Mercenary Basic Training.

My personal favorites are rule 37: "There is no 'overkill'. There is only
'open fire' and 'I need to reload'.", and rule 29: "The enemy of my enemy is
my enemy's enemy. No more. No less."

Dude, if that is all you are worried about, you have some priorities
issues.

Unreal, really. I saw him first in a joke e-mail amongst a bunch of

Dunno. It was just a collection of pics of guys doing things like

dressing like Tron..

Unfortunately, seems like these days that is a very real possibility.

Happened to me after I accidently cut some body off driving to work. I just
didn't look over my shoulder and scared the guy half to death.
He followed me to work, (which was very early AM and in a rather deserted
industrial park at the time) got out of his car and attacked me with one of
those long handle-type flashlights.
He was bigger than me and I was scared to death. He landed one blow but since
I had some training that was all and he is now blind.
It is really sad that he just couldn't let it go. And I still feel like crap
about it.

Ya really must keep in mind there are kooks out there and ya never know where
they might be.
