Gift for a new commericail pilot

My niece is going to visit a friend in Europe next month and he starting
flying for a airline over there about a year ago. She asked me for a
recommendation for a gift in the 100.00 range for him. Any thoughts?

I'm not an airline pilot but I travel a lot (used to anyway)....

How about a...nice travel alarm clock radio...like the Sony ICF-C1200

also has shortwave bands.

Both are around the $100 mark or less if you shop around. Both are
very small, look at the dimensions! They have 'world time' aka
adjustable time zones, nice for travelling. I have an SW12 and
really like it.

If you buy any radio with AM/FM digital tuning for someone in Europe,
be sure the AM (MW) can be changed to 9 khz steps vs the 10khz steps
we use here in the US....as well as tune to the odd AND even tenths in
the FM band (i.e 96.2) Both of the above radios will do that.

good idea. try to find out what he has or what he wants.

for all electronics: keep in mind that we (Europe) use different power
plugs and mostly 230V.
for radio stuff (like wireless telephones); we use different
frequencies, most likely your stuff won't be legal here.

your 100USD equals to about 65EUR. So better spend the money in the US
for a nice gift, you will get more value for the money.

As for dinner:
2x soup: about 6,00EUR
2x main meal: about 24,00EUR at least
2x beer or soft drinks: about 6,00EUR
2x coffee plus dessert: about 10,00EUR
----------------------------- 46,00EUR
including tax.

failing that one of the "Road Kill Bar and Grill" tee shirts out of
that restauraunt in Seligman in arizona. I havent come across a pilot
yet who hasnt wanted one when I've worn it to a party.

Its called the 30/70 rule. The captain will do 30% of the walkarounds
when it is at least 70 degrees outside.

Unless it's a 3 crew airplane with a (real) FE, then he doesn't do any.

If he is a new commercial pilot, what he probably needs is cash...

But, what I like are the LED flashlights that you strap to your head so you
have both hands free - sure you look like a dork, but they are convienent.
You can get them with mixed white and red LED's. You can get them for much
less than the $100.
