Does anyone know the origin of the term "BORT" to
indicate an aircraft side number?

I believe it's a Russian term originally, and hence probably some
jawbreaking russian acronym. I've read the odd book about Russian or
Soviet aircraft that explained "BORT Number" schemes for particular
aircraft.
