OK folks.

Nominate your favourite B&B in the Oshkosh area. This is our first trip.

Skip the B&B and stay in the North 40. Sorry, but camping with your plane
is the only way to really experience OSH.

Take it from someone who's attended 25 years in a row -- 15 driving (and NOT
camping in the North 40), and 10 flying in.

B&Bs are wonderful...the other 51 weeks this year...

The Green Fountain out in Waupaca. www.greenfountaininn.com I recommend it
highly ONLY if you have ground wheels; it is a 45 minute trip from the
field.

Darryl, if you are reading, chime in here. Was the place OK by you two?

Can't comment on the B&B situation, but I've gone twice on short notice
(booked hotel within 3 weeks), and stayed at a Hampton and a Holiday Inn
Express. One time I was south, the next time northwest of the show. Both
times it was about a 45 minute drive to Oshkosh, and the hotels were
excellent.

I didn't consider the drive much of an impediment at the beginning and end
of the day, but I only attended the show for 2 days - enough for me to see
everything I wanted.

BTW, if Springbank is anything like the south end of Calgary today, I
wouldn't count on putting in any air time today ... :) Last weekend I was
raking the lawn in a t-shirt and shorts, today I'll be shoveling snow (a lot
of snow).

Would all of the hotels in the northen 'burbs of Milwaukee be booked
by now?

After visiting SNF last weekend I was wondering if it was too late to
find a hotel for a trip to OSH this year.

A 1.5 hour or so drive wouldn't be too bad. It took me 3.5 one way for
the drive to SNF.

Ha! 79 degrees last Saturday, about 40 degrees today. At our house in the last
two hours, we've had sun, rain, sleet, snow, and hail. All we need is a
thunderstorm and a tornado to round out the day.

Gawd, I love Seattle.....

There are lots of rooms available an hour or less away. All the major
chains have online accomodation checks that will let you specify a location
and range you're willing to travel.

???

You've got *at most* 12 hours to see OSH each day. We usually do six
10-hour days, and NEVER see everything. Never. Personally, I'm ready for
a cold beer and a lawn chair after the daily airshow, which means 6:30-ish.

You want to add 3 hours to the day *driving*? That's a lot of wasted time
that could be spent hangar flying at Friar Tucks...

Buy yourself a queen-sized inflatable bed. They're marvelously comfortable,
don't leak air (like the old air mattresses did), and have completely
changed camping for the better. Pitch a good-quality tent, and you will not
only save yourself money, your Oshkosh experience will be enhanced ten-fold.

Trust me, I spent 15 years staying "off-field", and there is simply no
comparison.

I don't question your experience as it applies to you, but you often
forget that not everyone is you with your same tastes and interests.
I've been to OSH only once, and that was in 1995 for the Warbird
reunion. Other than the warbirds that year which were FANTASTIC, I
found OSH largely forgettable. I camped in the north 40 right near a
large hangar that I believe Kermit Weeks either owned or was at least using.

I had a large air mattress and a very nice tent so that part was fine,
but the shower trailers provided were the absolute pits. Crowded (had
to wait in line unless you took your shower before 5:30 AM or after 10
PM), cramped (no space to place your dry clothes while showering, dirty
(I think they pretended to clean them once a day), not much not water,
no good place to shave, etc. Our primitive state parks in PA have FAR
better facilities!

After 3 days, a forecast of severe thunderstorms has us check out the
college dorms. This was mid-week and people had left so we got a dorm
room easily. The dorms were hot, but otherwise not bad and the shower
and bath room facilities were very nice. We spent the rest of the week
in the dorms, even though our tent survived the thunderstorms just fine.

I found OSH to be hot, alternately dusty or muddy, with poor
transportation (the walk from the north 40 was long and I made it
several times as I got tired of waiting for a bus), poor food selection
and not much "camp store" stuff either. Fortunately, the north 40
location had decent access to "off campus" restaurants and stores.

Some of the vendor displays were nice, but I can get that at AOPA expo
and other venues in much nicer circumstances and the web has most of
what I need now anyway. I'm not a flea market person and that seemed to
be the dominant culture at OSH. Personally, if I go back to OSH, and I
have no plans to do so, I'd try to find a decent motel nearby and come
and go each day.

I realize that many go to OSH for the evening parties and that is a big
benefit if you are into such things. I'm not one to drink and party all
evening so that attraction doesn't hold for me. I went to OSH to see
the airplanes and the flying and that part was quite good, although had
the WW II crowd not been there, I'm not sure it would have been all that
great. I can see good performances at local airshows and they are a lot
more convenient and with better facilities.

I'm sure OSH has changed a lot since 1995 and probably has better
facilities now, but they plain sucked back then.

Your opinions notwithstanding, the OP is talking about driving from (as far
away as) Milwaukee each day. I lived in that part of the state most of my
life, and can vouch for the traffic in and around SE Wisconsin. IMHO,
staying that far from OSH would definitely mar the OSH experience.

> I found OSH to be hot, alternately dusty or muddy, with poor

OSH can be very hot. It can even be cold, albeit that's only happened once
in 25 years. We've solved the N40 transportation problem with bicycles,
since waiting for an empty bus to come along can be a long wait indeed,
especially at peak times.

The shower facilities are primitive, but adequate. The permanent ones
closest to the main gate are better than the ones out by the Weeks' Hangar,
which are temporary facilities that they bring in for the show. They keep
things as clean as possible, given the usage, but it pays not to be to
squeamish about dirt. OSH is an outdoor activity, so if you're not
prepared to be hot, cold, wet, dry or anything in between, it may be best to
buy the video.

Transportation around the grounds is excellent, via free trams. Just watch
out for IiGiCs (Idiots in Golf Carts) trying to kill you from behind. Food
choices have improved vastly since '95, but are still nothing to write home
about. We tend to eat two meals per day at OSH, both off-field.

As for the parties, well, they're nothing fancy. We always host the
Wednesday night rec.aviation HOPS party, but otherwise everything is pretty
low key. By the end of ten hours on the field, most people are happy to
just flop down in a lawn chair with a cold one and watch arrivals till the
sun sets...

Yes, I wouldn't want to commute from THAT far away. I was mainly
pointing out that the "camping experience" isn't for everyone and, to
me, wasn't the real experience of OSH. It was the flying, the airplanes
and talking to the pilots. Camping is not needed for any of this.

Agreed. And it's not the camping, per se, that makes the OSH experience --
it's the staying *on the field* so that you're *in* the show. If I could
figure out how to do that without camping (by staying in, say, one of those
million-dollar motor homes?), that would be every bit as good...

My wife will be going with me and even though she has enjoyed her
times camping she's gonna want shower facilities and A/C on this trip.
We are from Texas so a 600 mile 11 hour drive to the Guadalupe Mtns.
or an 8 hour drive to Big Bend one way and back over the course of a
three day weekend was a not uncommon for us. A 1.5 hour trip early in
the morning or late at night is nothing. Hour and a half is how long
it takes for me to drive her to JAX when she has to fly out of town
and for me to get back home. We're planning on being at OSH for two
days. I think we can still see at least 8 hours of stuff each day.
We'll be burned out after that.

With a men-to-women ratio of better than 8 to 1, and yet an equal number of
showers, the shower situation for women in the North 40 is quite excellent.
My wife and daughter never have to wait, and tell me that their showers are
pristine.

Can't help you with the a/c, though...

Hey Jim, you going by air or 0 AGL IFR this year? I'm likely going via
aluminum tube in order to keep costs down. Not as much fun but beats
not going.

Of all the options I would rank them:

Stay in Vintage Camping (must purchase classic aircraft first)
Stay in either North 40 or Camp Scholler
Scholler is closer to Vintage Flight line, North 40 to Warbirds.
Scholler can take tents or campers including a 24 hour generator area
(you can have your A/C running all night)
Local Hotels (probably close to impossible to get at this point)
Local homes (can usually find a last minute place)
UW dorms (can usually find a last minute place)
Farther out hotels/B&Bs

I prefer Vintage Camping myself, I know someone who flies into Green Bay
and stays there and he likes that better. I will say there are some
experiences you will never see if you don't stay on the field and
walking the flight line at dusk is phenominal (if you are wearing bug
spray).

I've seen a lot of the chain hotels pull their rooms off of the national
reservation systems for that week. They wouldn't want someone making
an online reservation for $50/night for that week.
