You may be able to get some relief (but not perfect) by using
a newsreader and a news service provider:

http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=faqs:news_readers

http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=faqs:news_providers

I was very happy with the spam filtering that Supernews used
to do. Now that Supernews has been sold to Giganews, it
**SEEMS** to me that I'm seeing more spam than I used to.

I'm not willing to testify to the change in court and I
have no hard data to back it up.

Policies vary from one news service to the next, I believe,
about how vigorously they filter spam before delivering
the news. There is a server-side filter called Cleanfeed:

http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/cleanfeed/

The author used to work for Supernews. I believe he
is now on sabbatical after the sale of Supernews to
Giganews.

As it turns out, the majority of the spam is coming from google users.

google has never replied to any of my complaints, nor do the appear to be
doing anything to reduce this spam.

You should find another provider. I'm hoping my ISP will simply block all
google messages.

Huh? Why would you want that?

How would that be enforced? If that works, could we also update the charter
to exclude any posts that I'm not interested in? That would make it much
easier for me.

Right there is your problem! Google should be your last choice for reading
Usenet posts.

I am also no computer wizzzzard, but I simply use my ISP's news service
(Worldnet has a good news service) with the Outlook Express program that my
computer came equipped with, and write my own filters. Blocking individual
posters is trivial, but some spammers use a different address with each post, so
you simply look for terms that few (if any) legitimate posts will have in the
subject line, and tell Outlook Express to hide those posts.

It is a fun mental exercise to stay one step ahead of the dirtbags and it
takes me a mere 20 seconds to add a filter term. For example, one of my oldest
filter terms is "Viagra", another that I added just today is "paypal accept".

The Acceptable Use Policy of some anonymous news providers (notably
Altopia alt.net include their intent to discipline the users who post
articles to newsgroups that are contrary to the newsgroup charter.

To have the newsgroup charter amended to contain such language would
require a majority vote.

You'll be forever playing catchup with that strategy.

You might consider a filter based on the first two or three fields of
the posters' IP addresses. That way the content can change, but you
still filter it.

First, I'm not an MSOE user, so I'm not able to assist you with the
specifics of configuring that news reader. I use Fofte Agent:
http://forteinc.com

You'll find that GoogleGroups provides the IP address of the GG user
who posted the offending article(s) in the 'NNTP-Posting-Host:'
header. Here's an example:

NNTP-Posting-Host: 218.65.123.140

I would examine the message headers of the spam from China being
injected into Usenet from GoogleGroups, and base my filter on the IP
address portion of that header field: 218.65.123.140

Perhaps someone who uses MSOE can assist you with the specifics.

FWIW, I don't.

I'm a happy and satisfied user of many of Google's services.
I am not employed by them or remunerated by them in any
way (other than using a half-dozen or so of their free
services--gmail, Google, Picasa, a free web page, etc.).

We owe them a debt of gratitude for saving the Dejanews
archives and for maintaining them.

Usenet isn't a big part of their business any more.
There are tradeoffs involved in offering free services
to all and sundry. On balance, I think the good they
do far outweighs the bad.

Of course, YMMV.

That's how most corporations operate.

The few individuals who archived Usenet for the love of

Thanks - much appreciated. I've been unable to stop reading Usenet for
