Probably somewhere in Texas - possibly Houston area (could be way out in
the countryside though). Obviously can't be sure. It's an IP address
belonging to RoadRunner, according to the DNS authority section. The
reverse DNS lookup yields the name:

cpe-72-191-163-46.elp.res.rr.com

Traceroute from my location a few moments ago terminated at:

gig0-1.elpstxh5-ubr2.elp.rr.com

The traceroute went through what appears to be a router in the Dallas area
and then possibly in Houston, based on guesses from probable host name
conventions used by RR.

Maybe someone with better tools and info can provide more accurate info.

What makes you interested, if I may ask?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm on a Mac and I don't have a DOS prompt.
After I posted I found the Network Utility with a Ping and Traceroute
Tab, so I just got the same data you did. Looks like Texas.

Reason is nothing sinister really; curiosity about a Usenet prankster.

I'll try to remember that web site - though it places my own IP address in
Eugene Oregon - about 20 miles from where I really live. Close enough I
suppose for a really big nuke to take me out unless I duck! ;-)

Fire up Terminal.app and you'll a much more powerful tool: a Unix
prompt. ;-)

elp == El Paso.

No, but you do have a Unix command line: it's in Applications/Utilities/
Terminal.

It places me in Minneapolis, about 125 miles wrong.

If you're using OS-X you've got something much, much better than a "DOS"
prompt. You've got a proper UNIX shell!

Try this. It works sometimes.

http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

How well it works seems to have a lot to do with how the IP users ISP is
set up.

No need. I've already taken steps with Wikipedia that will remove the
biographical sketch by my own request.
The requests I get for this information are declining anyway, and our
office can handle it here when and if needed.
When the bio was uploaded to Wiki, I should have realized and taken into
account Usenet nonsense.
No biggie at all.

If you had bothered to remove the crosspost to kook newsgroups from
your followup, you might see less of that sort of activity. Just a
thought. :)

Don't think so. The person causing the "activity" is right here on this
forum.
I do agree however that eliminating the other forums would have been
better procedure in this case.

Sigh.

He suspects that you are counting on a few people to overlook the change in
the Newsgroups header. It happens not through stupidity but simple
oversight. You know that and I know that and Larry knows that.

I've seen it happen and have no doubt you have too. The classic trick used
to be to add misc.test so that anyone responding who wasn't paying
attention would get auto-responder e-mails they weren't expecting. But in
an age of constant spam, that old trick is like spitting into the ocean.
(Plus the number of autoresponders is down to one or two I think.)

Say - you could always try to fight your own fights rather than trying to
drag in hounds from other groups.

Go ahead and deny part or all of above - it wont change what I think. And
oh yeah, you'll say you don't care what I think. But if that were true you
wouldn't even be posting to a discussion group. The whole point of posting
anything at all to a discussion group is presumably because you "care" in
some sense (even if it might be a perverse one) in how people think and
respond to the postings.

Sigh.

Funny, as just yesterday you were defending the page, saying it was
"frequently" needed:

"Just to enlighten you, I serve an many real world aviation safety think
tanks where requests for a bio are frequently asked for. The wiki page
simply makes it easier for interested people to access requested
information."

Now that the wikipedia admins are deleting it, you're now saying the page
is not needed?

Nice try but not really a very good twist on the real situation.
The quote you have presented here without the accompanying text that
completes the post was written ONLY after the bio was attacked by
another poster. In other words, the information about the bio was NOT
used until it was mentioned negatively by someone else and in response
to what was said.

As for my asking that the bio be deleted; that decision was made for the
exact reasons given and has nothing whatsoever to do with Wikipedia.

For your information, Wikipedia "deletes" thousands of files they feel
are unnecessary and take up needed space on their site. Our decision to
add to the deletion process was simply offered to inform Wiki that we
understand the situation completely.

God, what a small world you live in.

If he's doing something that's libelous or damaging to your professional
reputation, you can get a lawyer to send a subpoena to RR.COM. That's
how you get their personal information, and it -definately- gets the
attention of their internet provider.

(I'm an abuse admin.)

And that changes things, how? One day someone accuses your article of
being crap, you defend it. The next day someone else call it crap by
flagging it, and now you inform the wikipedia admins that you agree it
should be deleted?

Oh, I see. Its just a coincidence that you decide to remove your self-
written vanity article less than 12 hours after somebody with a
roadrunner connection in El Paso (which may or may not be me) decides to
flag it as against the wikipedia guidelines.

Moi? Fight? About what? BTW, are you confused about who you're talking
to or do you also think the the vamp is my sock?

BTW, nice try with the old froup snipping trick. That's very much
frowned on in my circles.

I'm curious: It's clear that you have some sort of personal issue with
Dudley, but WTF does it have to do with rec.aviation.piloting?

He's given me some great advice here that has been very useful toward my
IFR, Commercial and CFI training and understanding, and I have no doubt
that he's been a great help to other folks on the forums because they've
said so.

I definately can't say that others here, know what I mean?

You CAN'T be this stupid! But.........:-) It should be obvious that as
far as Wikipedia is concerned, and a simple Google search confirms this
BTW, the article was listed yesterday by Wiki as a candidate for
deletion by them. This simple fact coupled with the idiotic posts made
here by you and Mxsmanic on this thread simply convinced me that it just
wasn't worth my time to defend the issue any longer.
Since the article isn't really needed any longer anyway, I went to the
site and added my name to what I assume was yours. It doesn't matter
really.
All you have succeeded in doing is to remind me the article is no longer
needed.
If you wish to consider this some sort of victory, please do so.

No, as I said, it was NOT coincidence. The "activity" here on the forum
coupled with realizing that the article was being used as a hammer as
you have done here simply keyed my actions to go to Wiki.
To tell you the truth, until Mxsmanic's post, I had virtually forgotten
the article was there. You can verify that by searching for the last
time I mentioned it on Usenet. In fact, I think I'm fairly safe in
telling you that what you will find are very few if any times I have
mentioned the Wiki article unless someone else mentioned it first; which
of course shoots a rather large hole in your "self importance" theory.

Unnecessary comment. Shows REAL agenda here. You REALLY need some
lessons in how to nail people. You're way too obvious with statements
like this one. It fairly shouts that you have "other issues" with the
person you're addressing. In my case, you seem to be harboring a bit of
issue over that run in we had a while back when I told you you were the
worst CFI I've ever encountered on Usenet. :-)

I don't think on these terms. What YOU believe I think of myself isn't
necessarily what I DO think of myself......simply your opinion.

Sorry you see me this way, but it obviously can't be helped.

I don't know. I'm not the one who made this thread. What does tracing an
IP have to do with piloting?

I just don't see it. All I ever see him post is either pointless one
liners, or a 5 paragraph post filled with convoluted sentence structures
and odd formal tones to make the post sound smarter than it really is,
but in the end all he ever does is, at best, state the obvious. He's the
perfect example of the type of person who may have done good things in
the past, but has fallen victim to his own hype.

I mean, he wrote his own god damn wikipedia entry for petes sake. He's
the type of person who would instruct in his will to have a monument
build honoring him after he does, paid by his own estate (ala Evel
Knievel).

People like that just amuse me. I think it's fun to mess with them and
watch them try to rationalize their actions. "Oh I didn't write it as a
vanity article, I wrote it as a service to my millions of fans that fill
my fan-club office's mailbox with requests to hear my exciting life
story. Huh? Whats that, someone doesn't like my article and thinks it
should be deleted? Oh well thats OK because it's not really needed
anymore anyways..." Freaking hilarious.

Oh well thats OK because it's not really needed
anymore anyways..." Freaking hilarious.

and odd formal tones to make the post sound smarter than it really is,
but in the end all he ever does is, at best, state the obvious. He's the
perfect example of the type of person who may have done good things in
the past, but has fallen victim to his own hype.

Unnecessary comment. Shows REAL agenda here. You REALLY need some
lessons in how to nail people. You're way too obvious with statements
like this one. It fairly shouts that you have "other issues" with the
person you're addressing. In my case, you seem to be harboring a bit of
issue over that run in we had a while back when I told you you were the
worst CFI I've ever encountered on Usenet. :-)

It doesn't matter how many times you have mentioned it in the last year,
the point id you wrote your own damn wikipedia article. I find it funny
how you repeatedly can't grasp why this is so humorous to people my me
and apparently mxsmanic who see you as nothing but a parody of the kind
of person you claim to be.

It's especially funny because the article reads exactly like your posts
here. Nothing but half-assed claims of notoriety alongside substance-less
fluff all wrapped up in image-conscious tone.

Whatever. I should point out however that fortunately for me, you and
Mxsmanic seem to be fairly alone with all this bull ****.

Personally, my main interest in you is that you claim to be an
instructor who has shut down a fuel selector valve on a student to
"teach him" about engine failures on takeoff.

Apparently you and I will be meeting fairly regularly on these forums as
you post concerning flight instruction. Any "disagreement" we might have
will I'm sure be judged by others for any missing accuracy or attempts
at "self importance". That seems fair enough to me.
I believe I'll just go with that :-)

Expected. He's been chaffing at the bit since the "fuel starvation on
takeoff" thread. When people like him get nailed, they strike back at
the hammer. No big fuss. They attack where they think they see
vulnerability, in my case, my having been around since the dinosaurs
equates to my "self importance".
What's really tragic about guys like this is that instead of sitting
back and learning something (not only from me, but from others with
experience as well) they miss the resources available to them.
In this case, he sees the fact that I see myself as a resource for him
as an expression of self importance. Sad!
Part of it's my fault for sure. I really jumped on his ass about that
pulling the fuel valve bit he did on a student. I should have approached
him differently. Nobody likes to be told they're flat wrong, especially
on a public forum.
I might have helped him instead of ****ing him off like I did.
Oh well........maybe he's right about one thing. Years ago I wouldn't
have made that mistake :-)

Mmm, I kinda doubt you could have helped him. He's shown what he is
clearly at this stage and "learner" doesn;'t seem to be part of his
