View Full Version : I've finally Had It!

I've had it. Despite my attempts to ignore the Berties and the
Maxwells of this NG, I give up.
I'm giving R.A.P a pause for a while. I'll come back when it cleans
up its act, maybe.

I find myself less frequently visiting this group as well. Originally
Bertie seemed like a knowledgeable pilot who just had an irritating
personality (we have lots of those here). Lately he seems to just
spend his time starting arguments and not contributing anything to the
group. Something has happened to him and I'm not sure what it is but
it certainly had dramatically reduced the useful contend of the group.

I have put kill files on my mail reader and has cut down a lot on the
messages I do not care to read. Then I have the responders to the
Berties, etc that I have to put is also. Now there are not many left
with good piloting information and contributions.

Not until the people that think they are "entertaining" and "on-topic" stop
replying to them. I fear that will be a very long time before that happens,
if at all.
This newsgroup is on its death-throws. It won't be long until there is
nobody left except kooks and trolls, now.
Well, I've checked in, and found it to be the same as the recent "snafu"
status. I'm out of here for a few more weeks.
So sad.

Yup.
I was about to post a PIREP on the Red Bull Air Races in Detroit this
weekend, and see this? What kind of an idiot wastes their time on a
piloting group pretending to be other posters?
If there was some kind of a point to it, a little logic and some wit, it

Me, neither.
Just guessing, but I think it's an unholy (and unintentional) alliance
between (a) folks who don't know any better and (b) the fakers answering
their own posts.
The real question is: Why? What is the point of coming to a piloting
group and pretending to be someone else? It's truly sad.

Seems his group of followers is either shrinking, or just lamers from troll
groups recruited through cross posting.

Jay,
this thread is a wonderful example of how the dynamics work. Maxwell
engages the idiots, and a flood of messages ensues. Right in the
middle, gregvk is asking "ok, what is this all about?" - and another
flood ensues. This group is broken beyond repair, I fear.

Don't take it personally, but this thread shows quite nicely that you are
part of the problem. You have managed (again) to engage the idiots and get
the message count to blossom into uselessness.

Kill files are your friend. I've added Maxwell (only my second one, ever)
after his eternal Bertie responses made THAT kill file ineffective.
With those two gone, the S-to-N ratio has improved dramatically.
Unfortunately, the impact on newbies of viewing all their drivel is still a
serious problem. Real pilots who see all the troll-spam aren't hanging
around much anymore, reducing authentic participation to a bare minimum.
The only thing that can fix this group will be an influx of new pilots --
and the trolls know it. Thus, they continue to do their best to drive 'em
away.
I would never have believed the damage such a small, dedicated group of
people could do to a piloting group like this. Their actions fly in the
face of everything I've ever observed about pilots in general, which is what
makes it such a mystery. And also such a damned shame.

Have you noticed what has happened to rec.aviation.ifr without the

I don't even see crossposts from alt.usenet.kooks. I wouldn't have seen any
of these if you hadn't quoted the entire post when spamming the group with
29 copies of your top-posted three line complaint.

LOL, you pukes, trolls, k00ks etc. just keep trying.
Remember, they can only win in the heads. But it's a bit crowded with all
those other voices.
AUKk00ks are just kooks. How I long for the REAL AUKers of yore.

Mainly folks who wanted to take over an organization that I'd put years of
my life into through underhanded means, and I stopped them from doing it.

Once upon a time, I was a member, but I dropped it many years ago.

Thanks for confirming that you are, indeed, John Callahan, KR5K.
FWIW (and I'm certain you don't believe me), all I wanted to do that day was
find out why you took my radio down without bothering to tell me you were
going to do so, and in direct violation of the principles of the
organization; I found out fourth-hand. I made no threats, and had no
intention of doing anything but talking. Yes, I was badly upset. That's all
it was, however. You took it for far more than it actually was. If you'd had
the courtesy to tell me you were taking my radio off the air, the whole
thing would have been avoided.
I used to say that I'd listen with respect to anything you said about
flying, based on your long experience, and ignore anything else. At least
once upon a time, you had some integrity.
Oh, and for those who might be reading this, the incident John is referring
to took place 25 years or so ago.

Oops. It didn't strike me until just now that that could be misread as an
ICAO airport identifier. That's his ham radio callsign.

*The* server? Bwaaaaahahahahahahaaaaa... Anyway, the website was serving
up only errors for a couple hours today. A major, major screwup no
matter how you count it. Someone is having an even worse day than I've
had lately.
Looks like it was just North America, though. No official explanation
yet, although there's a lot of speculation running around. The Wall
Street Journal is laying odds of a million to one that it was sharks
with laser beams on their heads. (Trust them to not get the quote right...)

I did absolutely nothing of the sort. I didn't even arrive on site until you
were driving out the gate. Remember pulling up to where I was standing
*outside* the gate? I had literally just arrived when you did. I couldn't
even figure out why you were showing me you were dialing 911 on your
cellphone; that was the first I'd seen of you, or the site, all day.
You may not have taken it off the tower, but you did shut it down. Without
telling me a thing before or after.

say something.

I'm not the one who threw the laptop; I wasn't even at that meeting. I've
committed my share of things I'm not proud of, but the Gang of Three is
blaming me for a lot more than I actually deserve. BTW - ask the next one
who mentions my flying off the handle at KM5R at the special meeting how
come they don't mention my public apology to her at the next FM Society
meeting...

I fully intend to do just that. There's nothing so important that it's worth
me getting killed getting there. I'm a VFR pilot, with almost no recent
experience, and I'm acutely aware of the fact (even if AVEMCO didn't remind
me the hard way...!). My decision making will be strongly biased toward not
going, or landing right away; only if I'm convinced there's a margin of
safety will I go, or keep going. Worse comes to worst, I can always get an
airline ticket, or rent a car.

You rode an *elevator* to fix a radio tower that was 1500 feet tall?
Dang, Big John -- they grow them towers big down by you guys...

Jay/TronGuy made a lot of enemies here in TX before he left.
As I recall, he is a Mensa(?), smart as hell but don't know anything.
He put my life at risk one time here (had to call police) so don't
hold him in high esteem.

Yeeah. The Houston area is flat. Real flat. There aren't even hills around
there. To get good radio and TV coverage, they have to use tall towers.
There are something like 4 2000-foot towers close to each other on the
southwest side of town, and a couple of others elsewhere.
Naturally, you don't climb a 2000-foot tower to fix something. (Well, normal
people don't. I know one guy who climbs towers like you or I would walk out
to the mailbox. He's universally regarded with awe.) They put elevators on
them. The tower John's talking about is unusual, even as they go: it's got a
candelabra on top, and three TV antennas, one at each corner. There's a
platform between them with a 2-story, 25-foot-wide hexagonal building in the
middle. It's really pretty impressive, even if it is only 1500 feet tall.

1.I didn't take anything down from tower (1500 ft)to fix. You made a
false assumption when you tried to derail the elevator with me in it
or break the cables. A fall from 1000-1500 feet would have hurt :o(
2. I did most of the repair of equipment on tower in those days.
3. Have followed Texas FM Society postings and you are a no no with
them. Threw a laptop at a lady in a meeting???? etc. I read their
postings and they still talk about you and your activities.
Nice looking bird you are getting. Listen to Dudley, and others who
have withstood the test of time and fly conservative and safe. If the
WX is bad, park the bird and go to bar and RON.

Yep. It looks great! I hope it takes off...

For sure. It's been awful here -- and now the Iowa River is flooding.
Evacuation orders have been given for folks just south of our hotel...

The one being discussed is taller than a normal traffic pattern.
Has been some posting here about radio interference flying around the
area where the FAA authorizes all the big TV towers south of town
(Houston).

WX in IA has been bad. Tornados, flooding, etc.
Don't go flying in that WX.

Original comment was marked OT which you must have missed?
Car uses compressed air in four tanks under car. 65 mph and 125 mile
range. $2 for electricity to pump tanks back up. Unless you have wind
or solar power to run compressor.
Think the system could be put in a bird for short flights (hour
plus????)
Think the flying WX in IA is ok comment for RAP???
You'all have a nice week.

Yeah, saw it on TV a couple of months back. Looks interesting but I'm
kind of rural so it wouldn't suit me.
