Cambridge S-nav Help

Hi All,


I've currently got a s-nav installed in my pegasus.

The problem is can you wire up a undercarrage alarm like what you can do
the the L-nav??

I fly on tarmac runways so the idea of landing with the wheel up doesn't
sound like FUN


I think its version 7.9 on the software

I saw that option on my S-nav and decided it was a very bad idea. The
gear warning should be a different sound, coming from a different
place in the cockpit and preferably quite loud. Think about it, you
have been hearing the S-nav audio all day long................do you
thing one more sound coming from the same place will get your
attention?

PS, Got to tell a gear-up story. At Truckee a few years back we saw a
bird coming in with gear not extended, so we called on
122.8............nothing! Then we tried 123.3..............still
nothing. Then we waved our hands as the ship floated
by.............the pilot waved back! When we got to the ship it was
hard to communicate with the pilot because the gear warning horn was
making so much noise! So much for gear warning devices! I have had 2
gears collapse on me, but have yet to not extend it. My landing check
is WWW.TFR

Can't say about the S-Nav but on the 302 (same manufacturer), the gear
warning sound is MUCH different than that of the normal vario.

It's a tool, not a fool-proof system. I've heard many more stories where
a gear warning prevented a gear-up (I have one :-) ).

I believe you can and it is probably explained in the manual, which is

Or you could go with the recorded voice option ("Put the gear down you
idiot!, Put the gear down you idiot!, Put the gear down you idiot!....")

Jan,

I'm almost sure the S-Nav doesn't have the possibility of wiring a gear
warning to it. This is the small difference to the L-nav.

In my club we have 4 (out of 5) gliders equipped with L-navs/S-nav.
Although the wheel warning of the L-Nav is a nice feature we have removed
it in all our ships (to my regret) and replaced it by a simple buzzer,
because the L-Nav has one big drawback in the warning system: When turning
down the volume - f.i. in the circuit - the wheel warning sound is turned
down as well.

With the Cambridge 302 the warning sound is NOT dependent on the audio
volume of the vario and in our private glider we have installed the 302
gear warning system, which works perfect!

Similar experiences as JJ. Two gears collapsed (LS); none forgotten.
Except...on my first contest finish in a high-performance sailplane, I
came in low and hot, pulled up, did a 270 right and 90 left to land
the other way, and touched down smoothly...with the gear horn going
off in my ear. I had extended the wheel but in the rush to get sorted
out I hadn't folded the handle quite far enough over in the locking
slot. The gear was fine, and I've hypothecized (rationalized?) that
the reason my mind ignored the warning was because subconsciously I
knew the wheel was down. Whetever, it never really registered. And
this was during the kind of stressful situation that might cause me to
forgot. So I haven't installed a warning horn in any gliders since
then. So far I'm 100% gear down. Although I did forget to dump water
ballast once...during a low, fast contest finish requiring a 180 to
hook the gate, then completing the 360 to end up on downwind before
merging with traffic finishing from the opposite direction. Hmmm.
Interesting what stress will do.

Sorry, Jan. You will have to add a seperate buzzer. The S-Nav does
not have this capability.
