View Full Version : Winter Vario # 5493

Anyone know what size flask is requied with this unit. I have one and
can not find specs on Winter's web site. Also, is the flask size
critical to the accuracy of the unit? Instrument is 57mm and +/- 10
knots. S Nr. 05493. Instrument was purchased by me second hand.

Look to Wings and Wheels. If it is a linear scale, normal response
rate vario, it need a .45 liter flask. If it is logarithmic or fast
response, it will take a .90 liter or 1.8 liter flask. The model
number and the look of the face of the instrument will tell you what
you have got. It may also have the flask size requirement printed on
the back of the vario.

My guess is you have a standard repsonse rate, linear vario. .45
liter flask. If you use a flask that is too small, the vario will
show less vertical than what you are doing. If you use too large a
flask, it will say you are doing more than you really are. So, yes.
Flask size does matter! :-)

Hope this helps!

Hi,

According to the data on my web site, there is no such thing as a 5493.
http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/winter/varios.htm

But my web site was created using a recent catalog which may not have been
100% complete.

Yes, the flask size is critical.

Is there a model number on the unit. That may help nail down whether it is
a standard, or sensitive, or logarithmic unit.

Hi,

Also, the Winter web site does not list that model number.
http://www.winter-instruments.de/english/produkte/variometer/v_tabelle_mit.html

Neither does their catalog.
http://www.winter-instruments.de/data/winter_Instruments.pdf

It must be an out of production model number, or an incorrectly written down
number.

Thanks for the responses. The number is 05493 and is printed on the
face of the unit. This must be an out of production unit. It says
1,8 Ltr on the back which I suppose means 1.8 liter. I was hoping it
took less. Looking at Winter's cataloge it seems the 1.8 liter units
are not the most common. That is quite a bit of capacity for such a
small instrument (57mm)! This vario looks just like a 05483. Maybe
the company will get back to me on Monday as to just exactly what the
specs are on this unit.

you're listing the Ser# of the vario, not the model #
MOST will use .45L (roughly pint size)
if it is standard linear scale it will be the .45L, other types Logarithmic
and fast rate vario's may use .9L and even a few 1.8L capacities.
the actual part # will be 5StV ______
