Ron, why all of the yEnc?

Have you not noticed that nobody ever uses that format, in this group?

It sure would be more to polite of you, to use what is considered standard
in a group.

Plus, most will not take the time to pull up your pictures.

Who cares why? It's a format thats been around for years now and a lot of
people appreciate the format because of the file size reduction. If the
files were another format I would still download them but yEnc is an
acceptable user format that cuts time and size.

> Have you not noticed that nobody ever uses that format, in this group?

For the last several years I've been here, I've seen frequent use of yEnc.
Of course, if you keep plonking people who use it, you limit what you see.

People who post using yEnc don't get a thing from it except a reduction in
the time and file sizes they transfer. It's not an a ego thing. It's just
another of the many ways you can post.

> It sure would be more to polite of you, to use what is considered

It might be more tactful to ask a poster to re-send in a format you can
decode rather than be arrogant and strike out at posters using the yEnc
format just because you can't/won't use it.

> Plus, most will not take the time to pull up your pictures.

Your absolutely correct. There are some very narrow-minded people here who
consider yEnc to be so bad they believe their computers will get cooties
and the hard-drive will fly-apart.

If not viewing a yEnc post or plonking people makes you feel better go for
it. It's not like a poster is out any money or redeemable user points if
you fail to view it.

The results last time were 50% were against yEnc and 50% were for it. The
final word was download what you want and pass on the rest.

Before anyone gets crazy and says the rules of the group are so and so, it
was already established there are no rules posting using yEnc.

I've been a reg on this group since 1999 and I hardly ever see a yEnc post.
It's been tried (with the same old tired arguments), on a.b.p.animals as
well, much to the consternation of the regs.

Get Xnews. Views and decodes all formats seamlessly,
including yEnc. Plus, it's free.....;)

Be nice, Gene! At least THIS group ought to practice civility and
exclude the sociopaths one finds elsewhere.

Everyone has a view, the views are not mutually exclusive, and not one
of us is tiotally correct.

I've spent a small amount to buy Agent and it takes care of all that
for me. I couldn't tell it it were this format or that format. Agent
just produces the lists and the pictures.

If I understand you, a program that does less for a user is a good program
and a program that provides more alternatives is a bad program.

Why didn't I think of that? So easy a caveman can do it!

What are the percentages on how many people use OE as their newsreader,
versus all the rest combined? OE 80% vs. the rest?

Probably close to that.

People insisting on using yEnc is about like the gas stations stocking only
diesel fuel, when only a small percentage of cars on the road can use it.

After all, diesel is better; far better fuel economy, right? So everyone
out there, get a different vehicle, or carry your own refinery around behind
your car, so you can make something out of the diesel that your car can
burn. That makes as much sense as insisting on posting using something that
only some people can look at, without going to extra effort to do so.

That is the same argument you are making. yEnc may be much, much better,
but it can not be used (or burned) in most people's computers (cars) unless
they get a new newsreader (car) or some add on program (refinery) so they
can read it.

I'm not going to change newsreaders, or add a program, just because you
want to carry only diesel. I have never found an add on for OE that does
not make it buggy as heck. If anyone can suggest an add on that does not
cause problems for them, I might consider trying it. Otherwise, I'll do
without those pictures, thank you.

Why not? I LIKE it. It does EVERYTHING I want done, and easily. I've
been using it for more than ten years.

I don't feel like learning a new program, besides. Sometime that I find the
motivation to learn something new, I might try it.

I guarantee the motivation will not be "so I can see yEnc pictures on
newsgroups."

Jim,

I don't quite understand your analogy because the newsreaders that decode
yEnc also decode the other formats as well such as Xnews, so in the true
sense a gas station IS serving more than diesel.

The only things about yEnc that makes it a good program are what I pointed
out earlier, The file size is reduced thereby reducing the download/upload
times. Not all people use highspeed Internet and that makes using yEnc a
wise choice for them.

I'm not telling anyone what to use to decode a file. I do believe that any
program that makes life easier is worth looking into.

As far as OE having problems with add on programs, the problem most of the
time is with OE itself. As a stand alone product it's great, but add 3rd
party programs to it and it can develope problems.

What get's me fired up are those people with a holy attitude that condem
people for using the program of their choice.

I have noticed an increase in the use of RAR files lately in other groups.
Just because I don't have an application to decode them doesn't mean I
should demand only those programs be posted which I can decode or for
whatever reason are easier for me to use.

It's a free world and your entitled to decode what you please, but I have
to say there have been some excellent shots in yEnc you are missing.

Personally, I found OeyEnc (http://www.mutexed.com/code/OeyEnc/) to work
perfectly fine on my machine.
Sometimes, it does not manage to decode all yEnc posts (maybe 10% of the
yEnc posters -not posts, seems to be connected to the person- in here), but
I have yet to experience any negative side-effects.
OE continues to work just as before, only that you can see yEnc pictures.

Martin

May I rephrase that a bit:
Photographers, shame about the excellent shots you appear to be posting but
which 98% of your intended viewers will not ever see. Plonk.

I hope that anything you post will be in huge bmp format!

I use an ancient out of date image viewer that will only display bmp files and I
DEMAND that all images be posted in that format :-)

You want to use a crap out of date pseudo newsreader, I want to use a crap out
of date image viewer.

If you don't/can't/won't decode it, don't download it. Simple as that.

No matter how "superior" the yEric format, the majority of the user group
shouldn't be expected to install additional software to view a few pictures.
It's simple, if a person wants the majority of the people to see their
pictures ... don't post them in yEnc format.

Wayne,

Not liking one mans politics is ok, but blowing this out of proportion will
turn this into a blood-sport.

When I say yEnc saves time, how does that translate to being superior
software? Who is forcing the "majority" as you put it to install additional
software? Your not being forced into anything. If a different transfer
method bugs you, don't use it. The picture is still a GIF, JPG, whatever.

Remember when we used Z-Modem and X-Modem to transfer? Let's go back to
basics and only use ascii.

I see people using PGP. Does anyone whimper about that? Of course not!

The only reason I have ever heard for not using yEnc is because some people
are content to use older software. That's wonderful. Use it and be happy
but quit whinning when I an others prefer using a time-saving tool.

If you feel that beating your chest and plonking people are the only way to
eliminate the pain and suffering you feel for not being able to decode what
you COULD decode then have at it. Do I loose S&H greenstamps or something
for being plonked? Plonk me daily, I do not care.

You seem to forget this is not a private moderated newsgroup where there
are rules and such. It's an open public newsgroup shared by hundreds
perhaps thousands of newsgroup providers around the world.

WOW ....What in the world was so fanatical about what I said that it spawned
that. I guess I should have kept my mouth shut. I will do so in the
future.

Honestly, I really don't know what participate such a strong response. Do
you write yEnc software or something? If so, no offense was intended.

I fly old gliders, run old tube based ham radio equipment, still use use an
old Compaq Aero 1500 PDA and use a first generation digital camera. I am
getting the place in my life-cycle where many classify me as old. So no one
should be surprised that my PC software isn't new.

It might be where you claim to speak for the majority of the group... or
tried to "shame" users in to posting the way YOU want to see things.

On usenet, it's ALWAYS been posters choice. When something new comes
along, it's reasonable to request that a poster not be on the "bleeding
edge" to allow folks to catch up.

That happened a lot when broadband started infiltrating the market...
one person with a new fat pipe would flood a group with thousands of
"huge" files at once, pushing many news servers past their retention
periods. People on dial up were drowning. It was reasonable to ask for
limits on numbers and size of posts. Today, such limits are ridiculous.

There's another binaries group where one person insists on posting in JP2
format. That was a standard proposed several years ago and it hasn't
caught on. Many viewers and usenet readers don't support it. He still
insists on posting that way, which is his right... but after a few
requests, nobody bothers him about it any more.

Yenc has been around for 7 years. It's hardly cutting edge. One of the
its main critics is a guy named Jeremy Nixon. He has a whole page
dedicated to "Why yEnc is bad for usenet." He acknowledged that "yEnc
has taken over as the main encoding scheme used in binary Usenet
groups." That was in 2002 and he hasn't updated that page since.

But I bet you don't use dial up.

And your computer probably has reasonable storage, or you wouldn't be
able to save the large and beautiful files that are posted here.

>Honestly, I really don't know what participate such a strong response.

I dunno... maybe it was just one more voice on the "do things my way"
bandwagon that pushed him over the edge?

If you don't like yEnc, don't download it... but then don't complain
because you can't see them.

Or, maybe, just maybe... not.

If he wants to restrict the formats that he can download, more power to him.
It's his machine and his choice. If he wants to restrict the formats that _I_
can _upload_, **** him. It's not going to happen. If he wants to killfile me
'cause I won't do what he wants... Hoo-rah. He'll never complain about my

1. I do not post in yenc.
2. I have never taken either side of the great yenc wars.
3. My statement was aimed at the complaining that is going on and on and on
and, well you get picture...not taking either side.

When yenc first started rearing its ugly head, I too was upset that I could
not see all the great pictures that were being posted. So I did what anyone
should do, I adapted. I did not want to spend any more money on software,
instead I spent about 15 minutes searching the Internet for a freeware yenc
decoder and found yproxy. For the last couple of years I have been enjoying
the great and sometimes not so great pictures in the newsgroups. And when
someone else develops another compression utility, I will adapt, search for
a decoder, and go on my way.

Life is too short to get angry over something so trivial as yenc.

Could this be a clash of cultures here. My news readers have supported ynec
for a long time 4 to 5 years at least.

I stopped using Micky$oft 10 years ago but do I understand they they still
don't support ynec or any other file format they don't own ?

Answer is simple you dump microsoft no more virus spyware etc and free
software,problem solved.

It even prevents top posting. Pass me another goat some one please .

Not even close. Jim had the subject line without anything in the post and
I'm wondering why. It's very much out of character for Jim. The only thing
I can suggest is that Jim was replying to the yEnc thread - I've kf'd that

I pay no attention to the subject line and assume it's what the first

The only text he wrote was "Jim".
