View Full Version : USA - FAA data plate exemption ?
Somebody must know this; I couldn't find it in the FARs.
ASA web site has an exemption document expired 1990.
Couldn't find anything on SSA web site.
There was an NPRM for a permanent glider exemption,
but I couldn't find out what happened...
So, what is the current story regarding data plates for
gliders ? Is there a current exemption letter we're
supposed to carry about the skies ? My exemption
letter copy expired in 2004...
Thanks in advance,
Best Regards, Dave "YO electric"

It's not in the CFRs; it was in an AC. SSA has a copy that you can
download. It expires every two years and is renewed; you need the
original letter and the latest renewal in your cockpit. They are both
available on the SSA site.

Go to News & Information; find the search box; type in <data plate>
(without the carats, of course).
This will get you to the two documents you must have.

The Extension letter that this leads you to expired in 2004. Is there a
newer one?

I went through this a few months ago. Attempting the search didn't help
much. The latest document identified by the search has an expiration date
of Oct 30, 2004. It was finally found by going month by month through the
archives. (I should have bookmarked the link.)
I believe the current exception expires Oct 30, 2008.

Unfortunately the Google search doesn't reach inside the member areas.

Dave,
The FAA extended the termination date of Exemption No.4988, as amended, to
October 30, 2008. I can fax you a copy, send your number.
