The City of Torrance (TOA) has passed a resolution mandating a fee for
the required annual fire inspection of the hanger. The fee is
$200-$500 depending on the size of the hanger. Basically, the fire
department has a card table
set out near the gate of the airport for a few hours Sat and Sunday 2
weekends in October and you get them to walk over to your hanger. All
they have ever done is look at the fire extinguisher and given us a
PASSED sheet. Takes 5 minutes max., including the walk to the hanger.
The Fire Station is right across from the airport, so those guys are
there all day long anyway unless out on a call. The city is not
paying overtime to anyone to do this.
Also, they just raised the hanger rents $100/month last month. The
City is broke due to mismanagement and wasting money on foolish
things, and only 25% of the pilots based at the airport are voting
residents so it's easy money.
The nearby residents hate the airport, of course, so they are all in
favor of anything that gets more money out of us "rich pilots".
