View Full Version : EW Recorder

I have inherited an EW Avionics D type recorder with the glider I am now
flying. But over the last few months even though I have taken it flying
with me quite a few times and it seems to work OK. I have used the EW
uploader to save the traces so I know the cable connection works, but I
have never actually been able to read the resulting data from a computer

I understand (and I find this rather disappointing) you have to buy
additional software over and above what you first paid to make full use of
the recorder itself.

There is however a simple MS-DOS programme that you can use instead. But
every time I try to connect up I get the message ‘put it in PRT mode by
pressing the PRT key’.

Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong or have I missed something
here

It's been a while since I had a 'D' but I don't think the DOS program
works on anything later than Windows '98.

This may or may not work:
Right click on your .ewt flight file, open with > Notepad. Then File >
Save as > xxx.igc It's the .igc that's important. Use this site:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/gpsbabel/
to convert the FAI/IGC track file to a Google Earth KML and view the
result in Google Earth.

good luck,

Edward

Douglas,

For the past three years I have been using the EW Windows Uploader. It
copies the files from the EW Model D and coverts the EW format to IGC. You
can also upload the files from your EW using SeeYou.

The EW Windows Uploader is free and can be downloaded from
http://www.edavies.nildram.co.uk/ew/ew-windows-uploader/
I am currently using Version Number 0523X.

The NavITer (SeeYou) program ConnectMe can also be downloaded free.
http://www.naviter.si/products/connectme.php?Itemid=62

Both these programs work well.

You can do a google search on "ewtoigc" and see if it suits your
needs.

As others have said, the Windows downloader is available for free from
EW Avionics <http://www.ewavionics.com>. It can be used to set the clock
in the model D, change the sampling rate, etc. as well as downloading
logs and clearing the logger's memory. Once the logfile has been
downloaded and saved to disk the logger's job is done.

What, if any, program you choose to use after that is up to you:

- your web browser (Opera or Firefox are better than IE and both are
free) is sufficient to post the flight to the BGA league table or OLC.

- at a contest the organisers should have the software they require to
download the log and score the flight.

- if you want to view the trace and analyse your flight you'll have to
get hold of a suitable program, e.g. GPLIGC (Open Source) or SeeYou
(commercial).
