View Full Version : Landing on the roads

Quite a while ago I read somewhere that in certain areas of
some state the law permits landing on seldom used roads.
Any truth to this? Any printed materials on where and when?

It varies by state. In Alaska, aircraft can land on state roads (or at
least that was the case 8 or 9 yrs. ago). I did it a few times when I was
there. It's not unusual to see an airplane in the parking lot of a remote
roadhouse.
Montana also allows aircraft to land on public roads, as long as proper
safety precautions are taken (they don't specify what those might be). See
MT statute 67-1-204
There are probably others. There are also states that explicitly prohibit
road landings. If you do so in an emergency, you'll have to dissasemble the
plane and truck it to the airport.

No recent info but we used county roads a lot for ag operations (crop
dusting) in Louisiana, CA, MN, NE. With all the current liability
issues I suspect it is caveat emptor?
I've lost track of all the roads I used for take off and landings over
the years. Lots of pics in my "gee whiz-no ****" book from around the
world.
