View Full Version : List of Questions about restoring a glider

Here's a list of questions about restoring an ASW-15B model.

How expensive is it to tint a canopy?

What about hinging it?

The old metal Ben Greene trailer sure could use some struts/hydraulic
to help open and close the lid. It's really heavy. Anything to
assist in opening it?

What are some ways to remove the painted on contest ID? I was told
Laquer, but wasn't sure if that was laquer thinner exactly.

Thanks in advance!

If Comp Number is painted, lacquer thinner is fine.. Same for
Acetone.....if the main finish is Gelcoat.
I've never seen a hinge on a 15 canopy. Such a modification probably
would negate the Standard Airworthiness unless you could get a Field
Approval.
Gas struts for trailer top might help?

Try the ASW 15 portal - www.asw15.org. Its a pretty good site with
worldwide input. You can pretty much forget hinging the canopy. I
think it was done once, with the canopy hinged a the rear. My
understanding is that it was very expensive. The removable canopy is a
bit of a pain but you get used to it. You have to be careful of where
you put it when its off the ship, particularly in windy conditions.

My trailer is a semi-clamshell of an unknown make but it has two gas
struts on each side. It works well except in really cold weather, but
I don't fly when its that cold anyway.
