View Full Version : Where are all these woman?

Lou
October 17th 08, 12:30 PM
Every time I read the completion bits in Sport Aviation and
Kitplanes,
everyone keeps thanking their wives for support, patience and
help. Mine keeps asking why I'm wasting my time and looks for other
things for me to do. My wife complains about a plane sitting on my
half of the garage instead
of my car although it takes up less room than the car.
Every builder I've met is either divorced or on the verge of
divorce. One
builder I met almost brags that he has built 3 planes and has had 3
divorces.
I've already decided that when I finish my plane, that I will thank my
wife
for making me want to be anywhere but in the same room with her, so I
used
the time to build a plane.
So, where are all these wonderful woman I only read about? Are
they
fictitious? Are the husbands being nice because they know that their
wives
are going to read the blurb under the picture? Or did these wives
really drive
a few rivets, glue some wood, or sand the fiberglass. My guess it that
they are
really out shopping, for a lawyer.

When I get surly, my wife says, "Oh, go work on your airplane!" b/c
she knows that it cheers me up. She's flown with me exactly once;
does not care for the sensations of flight. But she knows it's a
passion of mine (though it takes a backseat to her and the kids), and
as she told me today, that makes it important to her.

No, you can't have her. :-)

I do hope you are kidding, Lou.

I knew of a builder here who built and flew five; and his love for his
airplanes, and aviation in general, was exceeded only by his love for his
(only) wife, whose presence in his life preceeded aircraft. Precedent in
every way.

Lou: I've found one. Not only did she get me the plans for my Baby Belle
helicopter, she has 20hrs dual. Knowing that I like to go to airshows, she
figured out something for herself and we now publish the Experimental Helo
Magazine, of which she is a major contributor. I occasionally go to Sun'n
Fun without her but that is the only show that we aren't together. She is
urging me to get my helicopter transmission re-build finished and she
believes that it's priority is higher than the few "honey dos" that are
hanging fire. She was very much company and crew when we had a sailboat and
was the first to volunteer going up the mast when we had a runaway halyerd.
We are pretty much together 24/7 and while others have commented on that, I
hadn't thought about it. It just felt like that was the way it should be.
I think that I may have got the last one in existence though and she is not
my first mate, but she is my LAST MATE.

My wife used to complain a LOT about me not doing stuff with her. I
started complaining about her not doing stuff with me. I started
BEGGING her to spend some time with me. "I'll watch TV with you for an
hour, if you'll sand with me for thirty minutes. How about if I just
sit up a chair and you talk to me while I work on my airplane? I'll let
you listen you your music station on the radio. Well, can you at least
open the door and smile at me occasionally?" Then I would be sulky when
she wanted me to do something. "Why should I do what you want, when you
ignore me all the time. You only want me around when YOU want something."

It wasn't that hard at all to get her to happily send me off to my
workshop by myself. (She wants to call it a garage, but I refuse to let
here get away with it. We don't have a garage. It's a workshop with a
large door.) Just don't be sarcastic. I really would have enjoyed a
work partner. Some people just don't realize how selfish they are until
they're forced to look in a mirror.

Just curious, where did you expect them to be?

Thanks, Bob K.

Bob, I stopped expectations years ago. I'm just curious as to
if any exist.

I married a man knowing he'd built a plane and may still build another.
Who wants to spend every minute around him?
I only spend the BEST minutes with him...

Oh, they definitely exist, I'm just trying to figure out how you're
missing them.

Too busy building the plane, I guess.

And I married a woman whose first words with me were to challenge my
interpretation of an FAR in front of a few hundred people. Over the years
I've heard her say (in the airplane parts store) "Isn't the $10 exhaust
gasket worth the money over the $2 one? Get the good ones (all 6 of them)."

She's gotten greasy with me (you should pardon the expression) and held one
end of the wrench while I tightened the other end. She's vacuumed carpet,
polished windows, and in general, been one hell of a partner. She's been
through a forced landing with me and to Oshkosh a half-dozen times. The
fact that she's a commercial pilot CFI may have something to do with that.

They are there. They are wonderful. They are most difficult to find.

Bax said it best. "That's what my FIRST wife said."
