View Full Version : When Airline Pilots WON'T speak ENGLISH!!!

hello
October 19th 08, 03:31 AM
The FO does most of the communications; they don't trust my perfect
English. In South Fl if you speak good English you can't communicate
properly. I have had a lot of fun with my language in Miami. Most people
(latins) assume I don't speak or understand Spanish, and it is quite funny
when they talk about me (in Spanish) in front of me without knowing I
understand.

All joking aside, communications is one of my pet peeve's in the cockpit.
With so many inexperienced and foreign FO's, they have terrible and poor
communication skills. There is one African FO, that answers "OK!" to all ATC
instructions. Never reads back anything, and most of the time doesn't even
know what they told him. I like the guy, but he has no place flying until he
can understand English. He is the only guy I ever lost my cool with. When I
fly with him, and it is my leg, I do all the flying and all the
communicating.
I fly pretty good, so far I haven't broken an airplane, so I guess that
accounts for something. Considering some of the FO's I fly with lately, that
makes an above average Pilot (in my opinion). I haven't flown a light single
in years, so my brother doesn't let me land his airplane, as most jet
pilots, I have a tendency to start my flare way too high when flying a light
single.

Thank you. We thought it was only here in AZ, where a lot of aspiring
airline pilots come to put in time since there are so many good-weather
flying days here. Nothing worse than being in the pattern at an
uncontrolled airport and hearing, "FDVHUdscr Trafffick, Cessna ^%#s9,
&&VSs, Gobbledegoop 1 mile, VFSDGXCxss, FDVHUdscr Traffick."

Huh? 1 mile WHERE? How do these people pass the oral exam? Do they
understand US? Do they care?

If you're flying a multi-crew jet single pilot and allowing your company to
get away with forcing you to do it, you're an idiot.

A lot of them must be women???

But as I tell all my FO's (whether they speak English of not, IN ENGLISH),
"If you make us go around, you won't fly another leg for the rest of the
day." I only say this when they're at 30DME from the field and still at
18000 Ft.

Well, THAT's real helpful for ensuring safety.

If I'm riding, let everyone know before we take off, so I can get off.

If going around is needed, I would prefer to go around, without fear of
punishment for the FO.

But since you are posting without a real identity, you probably only fly
Microsoft flight simulators, so it really does not matter what you are
posting.

So if he were to make up a "real" sounding name, perhaps something like Jim
in NC, that would automatically make him a bonafide pilot?

It's comments like this that make airline captains not even want to share
some insight.

I'm sure that's true, and US pilots abroad should be able to communicate
clearly in languages spoken there, too. But I don't think many US pilots
travel abroad specifically to learn to fly or to build hours. I just
figure if they're here specifically for that, speaking FLUENT, clear and
*understandable* ENGLISH would be a pre-requisite ... but apparently not!

Even if I were to take your word that you actually are, your own comments
prove you are a 3rd rate captain flying for a 3rd rate airline and you have
a 3rd rate command of your first language. As such your opinions aren't
worth the bandwidth it took to transmit them.

For instance, the crew who were told to descend to 3,000' QNH 1018.
"Could we have that in inches please?"
OK, descend 36,000" 1018...

Suit yourself. You need a thick skin to play here. Credibility is not

as for the subject: I heard myself the worst things on the radio,
especially in Arizona from those German Lufthansa-students.

on the other hand: esp. in the US you hear phrases like "next report
$landmark", but the landmark is not on the chart and only locals are in
the know.

It helps to post with something else like a name like "hello" :-)
And it helps to use a decent newsclient and newsserver (my offer for
free usenet access is still valid; our newsserver is among the TOP1000.)

Ever heard of German corner? Rhine assumes the entie planet knows where it

True, but if you ask they tell you how find it, radial and distance from
KRH, a bit easier than a landmark. ;-)

True again, but is easier to give a radial/distance from a VOR than
describe a Landmark

And then German corner is just used aa a short cut, not a reporting
point, if you don't know where it is they can clear you to KRH

If you fly sans radio you do not need English, and is only used for IFR
flying (as a short cut given by ATC), usually done with radio in Europe.

Yep.

All far from the original point though, which seemd to be drifting
towards the US controllers being lazy or slopp or something.

i could tell you tales about Germany.....

Or just about anywhere, for that matter.

Yes, i know.

But if you really want to get into a ****ing contest about german
controllers....

there was this guy in Frankfurt who cleared me to take off when we were
still on the taxiway, almost a half a mile from the end of the runway.
We accepted, and then did our checks. We lined up, and just to be sure,
asked him once again if we were cleared for takeoff... He freaked on us
and started this minute long tirade about how he had cleared us and how
we had wasted time now asking again.

Wonder if he had any relations doing ATC in Tenerife.

Somewhere I got the strange idea that the international language in
aviation is English (however she's mispoken) and the Regs agree with
me.
We've had a lot of foreign airline students here and so long as they
speak slowly enough you get a general idea of what and where they are.

One gentleman, when ATC requested his position, replied that he was
sitting....

The one you had in EDDF was pretty bad one, as, likely not too often,

Still not as bad as the Swiss controller who had 3 aircraft and managed to

Well actually he was Danish, even if he worked for the Swiss ATC, and he

Those comments come from a minority of highly vocal posters with enormous

Thanks, kind soul.

Duly noted. Someone recommended this group but I now see how immature they
are. Not for me,
Won't be back after today. Just dropped back in long enough to see how this
thread has deteriorated.

Quote of the day:

"If you make us go around, you won't fly another leg for the rest of the
day" (I only say this when they a 30DME from the field and still at 18000
Ft.")

Your new buddy is a MSFS non-pilot poseur. Congratulations. Considering
the high probability that you are a poseur yourself, I can't say as I'm
surprised.

Uh yes, but down here in old Europe, we, all to often, get a Texan
airline pilot swallowing the last or middle syllable. I guess Pidgin
English *is* the true aviation language :P

no binaries at all.

currently: http://www.hotze.com/index.php?page=newsfeed-peering

by the end of the year I expect to carry Big8 plus some local groups
minus some junk groups (but still without binaries).

Well, you should have tried some of the techniques you used to teach
english elsewhere, then. Death or english was always a persuasive
technique.

There's an oral for type ratings. Also, the litle chat you have before any
flight test is an oral. The examiner is supposed to pay particular
attention to the ones you got wrong on the written..

So what you are saying (the only way I can find to interpret it) is that,
if the FO screws up, and makes you go around, he doesn't get to fly any
more? Seems like a good incentive for the FO to try to hold onto a screwed
up approach, and so, possibly kill everyone aboard the plane.

Again, let me know if I'm flying with a captain like that. I want to get
off before we leave.
