Used to work Australia as WA9RQP using a home brew cubical quad antenna
and 180 watts PEP back in the 1960's.
Really upset a ham friend that had a 6 element yagi at 75 feet who
couldn't match the performance of my 2 element quad at half the height

Sorry to jump in.
I used to operate VK4DX ca. 1984
At one time used a modified CB radio for the 10M through a transverter to
reach the 80M band.
Dreafully dirty signal with harmonics up into the high VHF band.
Later purchased a much cleaner radio & consequently much less complaints
from the neighbours. ;-)

We used modified Heathkit CB radios to 10M for transmitter hunts. I also
used it for DX (5watt AM) and worked VX from Indiana,USA as well as
Europe and Africa. All using the Quad antenna with the help of sunspot
maximum conditions.<G>
