Looking to buy a portable aviation GPS unit. It has been narrowed down to
the Garmin 495 and the Lowrance Airmap 2000c. Any
thoughts/opinions/reviews of either would be appreciated.

New or used?
For the price of a new 495, you might find a used 396 that would give you XM
