This weekend is the 5th anniversary of my life as a licensed glider
peelot. I've long forgotten who pointed me to RAS at that time but two
things I remember from surfing these hallowed gleans back then are
(1) John Shelton is my comedic hero. Pez D. Spencer was a spooky model
of my first year flying gliders (he was a better peelot but I got the
girl). Newer pilots (especially those with any interest in contests)
absolutely must visit http://www.soaravenal.com/pez.htm with cocktail
in hand. Great stuff, that.
(2) I miss Lennie the Lurker. What a hoot.
Searching back into the deep dark early years of r.a.s. reveals an age
when folk spoke freely and used their real names at the same time
(Lennie excepting of course). Ah, maybe again someday.

Pez, yes, I miss John Shelton's talent and genius.
Lennie? Filthy mouth and obvious mental issues. Threatening to cut up his
glider just because. Besides, it riles up Al. Why would anyone miss that?

All the best qualities of a troll. His voice was part of the group
subconscious that helped keep us centered.
He also is/was (Kurt? Pat?) a damn good machinist with a good grasp of
metallurgy, and that's rare.
He reminds me of the poem by John Ciardi that begins:
I wish I could teach you how ugly
decency and humility can be
when they are not
the election of a contained mind
but only the defenses of an incompetent..
Thanks, Bob K.

If only more incompetents felt the need for defenses...
