Just another entry in "stupid pilot tricks". At least no one
got killed.

Yet.

With all the problems he's got and being around the Holidays time and
all, I guess he just couldn't cope. His actions were definitely
selfish ones. He should turn himself in and face the music. After
all's said and done, it would be the best solution for him now.

All of us pilots should be darn happy that plane didn't crash into a
crowded place full of people, like a elementary school full of kids.
If that would have happened you can bet every politician would have
shut down GA in a heart beat. Hopefully the guy will take himself out
and save the taxpayers the cost of a huge trial..... IMHO.

Apparently that is not to be. I saw on the morning news that the idiot
in question is in custody.

Yep, you're are correct Vaughn.

"'Fake death' pilot arrested

Date: 14 January 2009
US marshals have arrested a businessman who is believed to have tried
to fake his own death in a plane crash in a bid to avoid prosecution
for financial fraud.

Gadsden County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Jim Corder said Marcus
Schrenker, 38, was alive and in custody in Florida.

He was arrested at a campsite after reportedly trying to commit
suicide.

Authorities believe Mr Schrenker let his plane crash as he parachuted
to safety."

The bit that he emailed his friend, who was all over the news last
night, about it truly being an accident ... how many people strap on a
parachute when they go flying in a Malibu/Meridian?

If he wanted to commit suicide, surely he should have just stayed in the
plane?
