APRIL 4 - 11, 2009 TEXAS GLIDER RALLY / DICK JOHNSON WAVE CAMP

Marfa in southwest Texas, the 15th National Landmark of Soaring, will
host our annual thermal / wave camp for your "personal best" flights.
Wave Window to 30,000' msl. Marfa Airport (MRF) is almost 5,000' msl
on a grassy plateau near the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National
Park. This is a "bring your own sailplane and crew" camp. Not a
competition, not a training camp. 100 hours of glider pilot
experience is recommended. You will need oxygen installed in your
sailplane. Advance registration required as capacity is limited with
3 towplanes.

APRIL 10th -- We will honor the late Dick Johnson, soaring legend and
our mentor, with a special evening with his family at the Hotel
Paisano in Marfa.

Please register in advance with Burt Compton at
so we can get a count of sailplanes / pilots and best facilitate your
visit to this legendary soaring site.

Marfa Wave Camp Update April 4 - 11, 2009:

Warmer winter & spring than usual in west Texas. Last (?) cold front
coming through tonight, then forecast for nice weather for our annual
Wave Camp and Texas Glider Rally. Thermals last week to 13,400' msl
(Marfa Airport is almost 5,000' msl) and lennies in all quadrants the
past few days. We thermal up to the wave, generated by the mountains
in Mexico 65 miles southwest, and the Davis Mountains just north of
the Marfa Plateau.

The Dick Johnson Tribute evening on Friday, April 10th is shaping up.
Alice Johnson and family will attend. David Raspet (son of August
Raspet, Dick Johnson's mentor at Mississippi State) will show a
powerpoint presentation on Dick Johnson's contributions to soaring.
This is a preview of the presentation he has created for the upcoming
May dedication of the Johnson wing of the National Soaring Museum at
Elmira, NY. See www.soaringmuseum.org for more details.

If you are planning to travel to Marfa for the Camp, the Johnson
Tribute evening, or any time of year, please contact me in advance so
I may best manage the necessary logistics.
