PW-5 as the World Class

IGC decided to keep PW-5 as an World Class glider for another four
years.
The next World Class Worlds will take place in 2010 in Slovakia and
2012 in Adolfo Gonzalez Chávez (Argentina) . God bless their wisdom.

Real wisdom would have introduced a two seater 20m class to replace the
World Class. PW-5 participation has been shrinking while a two seater
class
would get twice the number of pilots involved, with great training
potential.

I've often felt that the Discus B/CS should be made into a one class
group with Grand Prix style "sprint" races. That could possibly make
for some good TV viewing.

I agree completely with this thought as regards to both the Discus and
the GP concept. NASCAR for gliding? Maybe S-H would sponsor the class
in some way for being made the exclusive manufacturer of the class.

The PeeWee class isn't booming but I'm not sure how many folks would
drop 100+k on a Duo either....

- There already are GP for gliders, so what is the point of making
another one?
Get your Discus 2B out and go compete.
SH cant produce a glider under a $100K, even if they if they outsource
the production elsewhere...
Used Discus'es go for about $50K, with used CS's edging even higher.
The key to World Class was supposed to be
AFFORDABILITY for the same class of glider and indeed, apart from Club
class which lives up to its renaissance, this is the only class that
offers this. Soaring as of today is being killed by high costs
associated with it, at least here in US and no Pw or SH will change
that.

This isn't strictly true. No decisions at all were made about the
PW-5 or the World Class. The reason is simple: there were no items
regarding the PW-5 on the agenda.

This is a very popular opinion, worthy of discussion at IGC. But
again, no such item was on the agenda.

Another idea that seems worthy of debate at the international level.

Here is my point:

IGC is a deliberative (i.e. slow moving) body. This has advantages
and disadvantages. New rules are never proposed and adopted at the
annual meeting. At the very fastest, changes to the Sporting Code
take effect 2 years after they are first proposed. Changes to Class
definitions take 5 years. Each year the delegates vote on proposals
that are on the published agenda, and the deadline for placing items
on the agenda for the March meeting is the end of the previous
September.

The delegates (one from each country) represent their respective
national gliding organizations, who in turn represent the interests of
all the glider pilots in the world.

The delegates are not IGC. You are IGC. It is your collective wisdom
that changes the rules or defines the Classes. Bring your ideas to
your national gliding body, or to your delegate directly. If you have
a proposal, write it up. Make the argument for change. Submit it to
your representatives. If your delegate ignores you or refuses to
listen to your ideas, vote the bum out.

Half of your proposal has been adopted. The 20m 2-seat Class exists.
The first international Championships in this class will take place
this summer:
