Goering asking his pilots what they wanted, and Galland
telling him "A squadron of Spitfires, Herr General"

All of this done before computer graphics - an achievement in those days.

Thanks for the feedback. CGI films just don't
have the same feel.
PS: What was that awful WWI dogfighting movie
that came out a few years ago? The one that couldn't
hold a candle to Blue Max.....

Do you mean Flyboys -- which pretended to tell the story of l'Escadrille
Lafayette?
It stank at the top of its voice ....

It did.
Even the tongue-in-cheek "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying
Machines" was more convincing.

Which itself was a sequel to "Those Magnificent Men in their
Jaunty Jalopies", IIRC.

You mean The Great Race with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and Jack Lemon (with
Peter Falk as his side-kick)? If yes, TGR was a couple if years after
Magnificent Men (didn't that star Yul Brynner and Steve McWayne or
somebody?)... ;-)

Oops ... it's the other way around.
TMMITFM came first (1965), followed by Those _Daring_ Young Men in Their
Jaunty Jalopies (1969). The latter was originally titled Monte Carlo or
Bust -- title changed for distribution in US and Oz.
Both directed by the same fellow, Ken Annakin.
Mr Erskine mentions TGR -- which was about a two-car race.
Jaunty Jalopies was about the first Monte Carlo rally. But both did feature
Tony Curtis as one of the participants.

I've never heard of the Jaunty Jalopies movie - I'll have to check it out (I
love The Great Race "HEY, PROFESSOR!!" - pie fight ensues).

Cake fight.
(Throw more brandy!)
Shall we now pause to remember Natalie Wood, smeared with several varieties
of cake goo, and wearing a Merry Widow in place of the corset which would
have been right for the period but which Natalie, then, certainly didn't
need?

As in Annakin Skywalker? Hollywood types do tend to
keep some names alive.
Archie Leach in Fish Called Wanda being named for
Cary Grants original name, etc.

Do you mean the awful film with Malcolm McDowell and a pretty-boy
blonde haired youth who salivated after his cynical leader?

Thanks for the memory! Other great memories of her are in the
made-for-tv series From Here To Eternity.

No, that was "Aces High".
Cheesy, but watchable. Better was "Richtofen v. Brown"
also released as "The Red Baron" with John Phillip Law and
Don Stroud. Almost as good as "Blue Max".
"Flyboys", OTOH, was the worst WWI flying movie ever made...

For the whole cheeseboard and cheese factory you want the WWII chopper
horror chick flick, The Secret War of Jackie's Girls.

It seems a lot of people thought that, not just you (and me). But when K.
C. Annakin died this past April there was enough chatter in fandom about the
presumed connection that George Lucas, who knew Annakin, issued a statement
denying he took his friend's name for the character's name.

> Cary Grants original name, etc.
IIRC there's a completely forgettable flick in which the villain is called
William Pratt -- Boris Karloff's real name.

And Roz Doyle on Frazier was named for the real Roz
Doyle who produced the Wings sitcom and died shortly
afterwards.

Just watch some of it on YouTube. Glad I did not go see it at the theater.
It looked like it really sucked badly.
