View Full Version : Caracole!!

After trolling for suggestions here, I decided to fly from Cal City
with Caracole soaring last weekend. What a great choice that turned
out to be! Friendly helpful folks, a restaurant right at the airport,
camping right on site, with a working shower and everything. I had a
great time even though Saturday was blown out. I got to hear some good
stories, learned more than I could hope for from Cindy and Marty, and
had a nice Sunday. After flying, a gaggle of us went to Ramon's, for
very good Mexican food. I'll certainly go again the next time I get a
chance. Highly recommended!!

Caracole is a great place.
I recently attended the Caracole Wave Camp and I had a blast. Cindy
and Marty are an incredible team, Let's see, there is Cindy's
tireless work with the feds to keep a wave window, her constant
patience with all us yahoo's, Marty's seemingly unlimited knowledge on
wave flying and glider maintenance....it just goes on and on. I
learned so much over breakfast and lunch at the airport cafe....

Can't say enough good things about them.
Yes, Caracole Rocks!

Both! Been there three times, but had not thought to inquire about
camping facilities. Must have been right under my nose. Is that the
little fenced off park with the big military twin inside? Where re the
showers?

Pardon the naivete, but I will be in the area in mid-January.

Is soaring still possible at Caracole at that time of year and if so, is it sufficiently reliable to warrant a trip?

If the answer is 'no', is there any location in the continental US where soaring can be done reliably in January?

Thatcher:

We soar year-around.
January is likely to be wave season, or really puny thermals
in our VFR short-short days. We have better thermals in summer,
like the 14,000 thermal tops forecast for tomorrow!

We are happy to make you welcome.
