But *which* bomber?

I'd always thought of the York as a Lancaster with a new fuselage.
Seeing the triple tail makes we wonder whether I *should* be thinking of
the Lancaster and the York as parallel developments from the Manchester.

Not so much:

Manchester ---> Lancaster ---> York

as:

_______________ Lancaster
/
/
Manchester
\
\_______________ York

No, your first thought was correct.

The Lancaster was a Manchester with an extra wing centre-section added to
make room for two additional engines and of course the substitution of the
magnificent Merlin for the troublesome Vulture engines.
The first Lancasters retained the triple fins of the Manchester but soon the
familiar twin fins appeared.
The York came much later and apparently needed the third fin for directional
stability to compensate for the huge slab-sided fuselage.
