Is it true that Bert@# got banned?
I haven't noticed he or Max for a while.
It's like a whole, new, wonderful world here!
May it last...please!

If it did, it also applied to a few other sites Max used to infest.

Indeed. Plus, the other one whose name should not be mentioned (not the
fish from long ago) has not been around. Anyone know who he is pestering
now?

Now, a few of the good old previous members have started to stop in from
time to time. It has been good and I too hope it will continue.

Go out and spread the word to the old time members, everyone. Send an e-mail
to a few of them, telling them what is happening here. Perhaps there will
be a return to this being a real place of value, again.

I'm still here, and read daily. Just like I always did.

When the bull**** stopped, so did I, just as I always intended.

The biggest difference I have seen is people treating each others opinions
with respect, and the people that were here only to develop a reputation for
themselves or promote their image have gone. Good riddance.

Keeping a peaceful group is everyone's responsibility, and no one is immune.

No. Your assertion appears to come out of thin air - or perhaps your
wishful thinking?

> I haven't noticed he or Max for a while.

Believe it or not, they probably "left" for the same reason many others
left. That reason being: if there is almost no audience, there is no reason
to expend the effort to post.

> It's like a whole, new, wonderful world here!

I think you are making big mistakes in your assumptions. Even if one
assumes that previous highly ego-centric posters don't return, if posters
do return there are bound to be more of the same class of posters. In fact
the distribution of all psycological classes should be expected to return
to previous levels, actually. That's the nature of human psychological
diversity. The outliers can't be banned from unmoderated Usenet groups.

I don't know how you ban someone from Usenet... but it is his history to
"just move on" when his work is done. His work appears to be done.

As far as Mx... nothing short of being disconnected from the Internet or
death would stop him from posting. I don't know which it is...

But, yes... it's like someone cleared all the toxic smoke out of the room
and you can breathe in here again.

Actually, I meant from Google Groups. I know one can't be banned from
Usenet AFAIK. I use Agent (awesome newsreader) at home but when I'm
somewhere else I access Usenet via Google (sorry newsreader) and I
noticed that Bertie's & Max's account said something to the effect of
"...discontinued due to violating Google Groups terms of service..."

That's odd. I never had a Google Groups account.

So far as I know, Bertie hasn't posted to the aviation groups from Google
Groups in years. And since Google always inserts an NNTP-Posting-Host
header that contains the originating IP address of the poster, I doubt he
would in the future (at least under the Bertie handle.)

It is just as likely that the accounts you are seeing were created by
someone else who wanted to do a "Joe Job" on Bertie and Max.

Agreed, although your tit-for-tat with Bertie (and others) was one of the
main reasons I (and many others) fled to Pilots of America last year. I
understand the urge to blast the trolls, but by playing their game you
became one of them.

Things are looking fairly sane around here, for the moment. We'll see how
long it takes Bertie to notice.

I wasn't hear to blast the trolls, dumb ass, everyone handles things in
their own way, and I could care less to debate methods with you or anyone
else. But I can assure you, taking shots at people is what got it all
started, and posting crap like this is hardly a way to do your part.

At the most certain risk of hearing all about my Wikipedia bio and how
I use Usenet for no other reason that to feather my own nest, I would
suggest to you that Jay's signature is nothing unusual. He states in
his signature that he owns two aircraft and a hotel that is completely
devoted to an aviation motif. He offers no "specials" or makes no
direct attempt to solicit business here. His signature is simply a
statement of who he is and what he does.
Of course there are always those who will read something sinister into
that, but that's Usenet.
Jay is well known here for both his interest in flying AND what he and
Mary have done with the Alexis Park Inn as that relates directly to
the aviation most of us enjoy.
I for one have never even come close to viewing Jay's signature as
spam. He and his family have devoted much time, effort, and indeed
resources to aviation.
I see nothing at all wrong with Jay mentioning his airplanes OR his
hotel here on this forum.
Of course, considering the way you have attacked me as well as Jay, I
thoroughly understand your position :-)
Lighten up Maxie. Your life on Usenet could be much more rewarding
than you have chosen to make it here on these forums.

Nonsense, in the past year Jay has done nothing to contribute to this group
and has spent all his time on POA until now, when it's time for his yearly
advertisement.

And that's exactly the point. Some one disagrees with you, so you decide to
start something.

In your own ignorance, people like you and Jay start these things, then sit
and appear to wonder while you blame others.

When in reality, we have only guys like you to thank.

I have been keeping my opinions to myself while a number of gentlemen have
made good use of the group, but at you and Jay's request I will oblige you.

I've been using eternal-september.org. I'm quite happy with them.
They're down a little bit more than I'd like, but I don't consider
Usenet to be a five-nines service anyway. Spam filtering is quite good,
and they have all the groups I care to read.

Plenty of options out there for you!

I used aioe for both reading and posting for several years, then they went
offline for a several months, but are back online now. I notice the aioe
server filters most spam much better than my ISP news-server does. I have
been unable to post through this news-server for the past week or so. There

Thanks to your suggestion a couple of weeks ago, I am now using
eternal-september as well. Thanks also for being amoung those who pointed
out the need to register in order to have the larger selection of groups

I had to get a (free) Gmail account and use Google Groups. It's not
quite as user-friendly but it's portable. You can forward gmail to
your regular e-mail account or just ignore it.

I bailed on rec.aviation newsgroups around the same time Jay and
everybody else did because the flaming and name-calling started to
bring out the worst in people. It is one of the reasons why network
administrators have decided to say "Aw, screw it" and discontinue
access. Nobody wants to have to maintain a team of admins just to
avoid blacklisting for being unable to stay on top of thousands of
inappropriate abuse complaints every week. It's easier just to pull
the plug on the whole thing and apply those resources elsewhere.

Moreover, we should endeavor to act like pilots, not angry old hens.

Meanwhile, it's been a positively brutal year for aviation so far in
Oregon. We've got furloughed Horizon pilots coming in to try to find
CFI work, or to just meet their unemployment benefit conditions. Last
year at this time even the new CFIs were too busy to take on new
students and there were more airplanes than tie-downs on the average
summer weekend. Now, other than the handful of regulars, the CAP and
transients, it's a ghost town. One out-of-work CFI told me that other
FBOs are reporting 25% of last-year's activity so far this year.

Last week, the FAA looked at our 50-year-old, towered airport, (KTTD)
and decided that the Bravo taxiway was 100' too close to the runway.
So, despite there never having been a related accident--even when the
taxiway was the alternate runway when the runway was being resurfaced--
they plowed an entire row of hangars to make room, with no plans to
replace them. There is no available hangar space here, so, a whole
bunch of owners have to scramble to relocate. They're threatening to
put metal detectors and TSA agents where there are presently picnic
tables, a closely-knit pilot and owner community and no history of
criminal activity.

The good news for us is, the FAA inspected the FBO last week and the
only thing he dinged us on for Part 135 and Part 141 operations was
because a renter had absentmindedly removed the owner's manual from
the Skylane. (The necessary checklists were still onboard and the
plane wasn't scheduled to fly.) They shut down our competitor last
year, so, we all breathed a sigh of relief when the inspector said
"Everything looks great!" The old-timers like to point out a lack
of new students equates to longer-term career security for pilots who
are already coming into the industry, and we're managing to hold on to
an above-average reputation as an FBO and flight school, so, we just
have to hang in there until the financial and political chaos settles.

Fly safe!

There are many, many other ways of accessing the mysterious, complex
world of Usenet.

Same here in Iowa. Our FBO's business is down over 50% from 2008, which
was, itself, an awful year.

FBOs up and down I-80 are shut down or on half-time hours. Many times,
while flying, we are the only ones talking to approach, and the FAA is
talking about downgrading the Cedar Rapids tower (and a whole slew of
others) due to low traffic count.

It's been like reading a bad movie script. It's going to take a friggin'
miracle for GA to live through this recession/depression...
